custom electronics thread

VW Polo. Old model...like 7 years old or so. Not exactly in the "latest cars" category.:D

Radio is VW brand. The oke at the official VW garage said he had never seen one of those ever...

How much are those rf things and where would I buy one?

Close. Cellphone (for music).

for that to happen with a cellphone can be expensive via bluetooth:D
well if your going to wanna listen to music via your cell your earphones is gonna have to be the sound to amplify.
There can only be one way for el cheapo.
you gona have to modify the earphones to a stereo minijack...go to a local electronics shop and ask a guy to make your earphones to a mini stereo jack.
this jack you plug into the rf unit you gonna buy.
then tune your radio to the frequency the rf unit says and you have sound in your car...simple easy painless

Hmm... I have a question that's not reallly technical but more product orientated. I want to install a radio in my car that has stereo bluetooth (A2DP) but can also play MP3 DVDs. Is there anything like that that you know of? This would mean that my radio will have an automatic handsfree ability for my phone and I can play music off it. Also, I'd like to my steering controls to still function (if possible).

I'm still searching around on the net. I see Clarion has something but I can't find anything locally...

How's THAT for a tall order? ;)

right..you must have the bucks for this.:Dit seems you do.what model car is this for(very important)due to the fact that some companys do have electronic devices to intergrate the dvdplayer to still fuction with your steering wheel remote....usually the radio and the optional steeringwheel controls intergrater must be bought from the same company..eg sony. This will make a hassle free installation.

But mostly it depends on the car make.if there is a intergrator for that model car...

nocturnal i will post tomorrow the model for your car...need to check my sources if they have one with steering remote intergration

please i need your car model

My SE phones came with a mini stereo jack connector (female)...so no worries there:cool:

Sounds like a plan. So how much $$ is a rf unit? Guesstimate...:)

/me thinks this thread is a good idea. With all the knowledge floating around here and with almost everyone experiencing car problems at some stage it could be useful in helpng to diagnose simple problems. taking your car in for a simple thing could end up costing you lots!

Example - I had another problem a while back with my indicator light on the left flashing at like 10 times the normal speed. I thought this sounded like a serious problem with the relay etc etc - a quick google reveals that a faulty light would cause the problem - something about the resistance being changed if you have a blown light which effects the timing of the flash.

True as bob - I change the light and it works! Who would have thought!

well,i really dont know but you can try incredible connection/hificorp/game...ask them for a rf modulator with a mini stereo jack...also you need mini to mini for the phone, that will cost about 15 rand..thank you..till later:D

yes the resistance must be right for the relay to work properly..i cant go into depth about this but the flicker(tick tick) unit must have proper resistance to have normal flicker...damn i am trying ppl to make it simple..:D

I'll have a look. Thanks dbm8

right in simple terms...it depends what merc youtalking about.
It can be true and false...
true if you dont put all lights on before jumping it,in case of a spike of dc/ac that travels through the wires. Also there are special terminals on a merc to put the jumpers on.THese terminals are very protected with electronics to not blow the pc...its highly unlikely you will fry the box..

I will say this and i might get flak from merc for this, mostly merc ppl will say this to you the customer to make more money and to bring and tow the car to them to jump start it

Makes sense now :)

Thanx mate

Always bugged me :o

This thread is dedicated to you the consumer and owners of vehicle,I will do my best to save you money ,so you can fix something yourself and not run to the dealer where they just charge you more...i mean my friends cars interior lights was not working and he took it in to toyota. They told him 600 bucks to fix the error...he brought it to me and 10 rand later his lights was working...
All i did was change the fuse in the engine bay...there are usually 3 or 2 fuseboxes in cars

Another helpful tip for today.
Always make sure that your fusebox and fuses are tightly in its place...Check them on a 6 month basis...read your manual to see where the fuse box is in your car..
Toyota owners of conquest..etc check your fuses are all ok in the engine bay..
TOmorrow another helpful tip.

post your tips to..thanks

I have a 1996 Opel Kadett 160is. The problem i'm having is a voltage drop at the petrol float. The petrol level reading that I get fluctuates so I decided to investigate. I put a multi-meter on the power plug to the float. When the ignition is on it reads 10v, but as soon as I start the car it drops to 8v, hence the drop in the petrol reading when I start the car. To get a proper reading I have to check the petrol level when the ignition is on. Any clues as to why there is a drop in voltage and the possible source of it?

Heard the same thing for BMWs (w.r.t. Lights). And the PC thing costs R13k to replace. Ouch.
