Hi

I need someone to build a custom enclosure in the Pretoria area. It's gonna be a simple 1cuft sealed enclosure for a Kicker S10L7 made from superwood/MDF to fit in an e46 BMW sedan.

Go to a standard car audio shop and ask them?

Isn't hardwood better than superwood anyway? I asked In Car Entertainment to build a custom box for my JL 12" - I supplied the specs (40 litre and sealed) and only 2 credit cards wide to fit in my Corolla.

I also don't reckon they charged that much - maybe R700.00 about 5 or 6 years ago.

Took up hardly any boot space because of the width!

Jan Steyn in PTA wanted to charge R2k cos they are all busy. Maybe I will call him again. Other places are sometimes not interested or want to sell me something else.

Which hardwood? Superwood is the material of choice normally.

Jan Styen with the Scoobies?

take the drive to JHB and go to Hygrade!

R2k? Maybe I have the price slightly off.

They're in Craighall Park.

I haven't been into car audio for many years, but I remember the cheap 'standard' boxes bought at fleamarkets used a cheaper wood than what I was advised to use.

left a voicemail at Tremor. Solly from Hygrade quoted me R650 using 18mm MDF. Wish I lived in the South :(

Material of choice is fiberboard or MDF (medium density fiberboard). I don't know what superwood is but I know just about every document I've read about making sub boxes recommend 1'' MDF.

what you read and what is available in SA is another story. People use the words MDF and superwood interchangeably. Secondly most of what i read use 3/4" MDF which is 19mm. in SA u get 16, 18 and 22mm. have you checked the prices of those? bloody ridiculous. if i had the time and the clamps and the wood i would build it myself. it's just not worth it for a once off job.

Well generally thicker is better. As you said most places will recommend at least 3/4" MDF but 1" is preferable for high output subs (which I'll be using). JL's specifically, I really don't want the box exploding on me.

Which is why I said I don't know what Superwood is, but thanks now I know what to look for if I'm thinking of buying.

Damn, I hoped it would be cheap, out of interest, where did you go to buy and how much is it?

Many places are willing to cut it. I'm not a box building expert so I thought I might build myself a sealed enclosure, it'll pretty much be rectangular so I'm sure most places can cut the wood. If not my brother in law has the tools, I'll give it a crack.

Present sir

:p

it is my understanding that JL's are more SQ type subs and weigh less than SPL type, so 1" will be overkill

Most suppliers and even some installers don't know what is MDF

I have tried a few places like builders warehouse but could only find 16mm. Another enclosure supplier who offered to make me a box said that 22mm goes for about R1200 a sheet IIRC

Many places will cut it but if they are slightly off you will have a problem with leaks if you don't seal it properly. Secondly you will need a few clamps to hold the wood together while the glue cures, those go for like R300 each. you will also need some pilot bits to pre-drill holes so u don't split the wood during screwing. That said, it will be interesting to try a build.

Not really, they have good quality which is why I'm getting some but they are also high output considering the quality. 13W7 for example is rated 1500W RMS.

Good to know but not surprising.

Honestly I don't ever buy @ Builders warehouse unless I'm seriously desperate. They overcharge like no tomorrow and they usually only stock things bought by people in the mainstream so it wouldn't surprise me they only sell 16mm but then again it depends on which builders you go to. Some of them stock things others don't.

I usually check there that whatever they cut for me is up to spec. If not it's on him. I always tell them before they start that if it's not accurate either give me the wood like that or you are starting over. But last time I went the guy used some kind of computer controlled cutting thing and it was seriously accurate.

Drilling also not a problem, but most tutorials I've read just screw in self tapping screws directly, but I'll keep it in mind...

Good luck with that.

let me know how it goes.

Where did you go that uses the computer controlled cutter?

I just got a call from Tremor audio. Must call him back now.

ok Julian can do it for R500 but with 16mm and a double baffle. I think it should be ok.
