I think JL are pretty decent quality, actually.

My Corolla had a 12" JL sub, MBQuart 6.5" splts and MBQuart 5" coaxial. Wiring was Stinger and run by 2 amplifiers - one for the rears and subwoofer only, and the other bridged for the splits. I love giving more power into my speakers than what they can hande, as I love the headroom and ease of playing with power on tap.

Headunit was a Kenwood KDC9000 something unit - which alone was R6,000.00 at the time. 6v preouts and every concievable setting.

We did an informal SQL test at Craighall Car radio, and with my '4 speakers and a sub', I bettered all on SQ. That's guying running R30,000.00 systems and the Rockford/MBQuart rep himself in the branded Corsa bakkie.

I was impressed with how everything worked together.

:D Erm well technically last time it was at the CSIR. Went with my sister to have some stuff cut up. But I've seen Builders use them also. The one at the CSIR will do it for free tho if you are a student and you can somehow convince them it's for research or academic purposes.

Those are some decent quality components. JL is definitely the best when it comes to subs, IMHO. Great SQ and in terms of SPL they don't mess around either.

I have no experience with MBQuart but I think Mercedes uses them right? If that's the case I was quite impressed with my Mom's Mercedes default sound system, really good quality considering it's OEM.

I doubt it - unless really high end Mercedes models or options? Even then, haven't heard they do.

They won generally every IASCA quality award for many years running at one stage.
 
talking of splits, i need to change my Focals and I am leaning towards RF Power Series. Will drive them with a JBLGT75.4. I wonder of Tremor does RF.
 
For all ICE installs in JHB just goto Tremor audio.

In all the forums i have read everyone only has praise for Jules and the team, and in my own experiance they are pretty damn brilliant in all aspects of their business.

Julian has a great setup at Tremor...of course I am totally biased, as I taught him in Std 4!! :p
 
Double baffle, are you sure you even need a baffle?

I had my dual box built out of 18mm marine ply. Nice and sturdy and sounds pretty good. Got 2x12's in it with out ports.
 
thanks alot Gnome. I been through most of 'em and also use winisd to get an idea of the specs. i would love to go vented but i really need the boot space. i will go thro' to Tremor on Sat morning. lets see what happens.
 
Yeah man, I used to run ported but this time I'm going those shallow mount sub + small box. I know it won't be as loud but I will still have plenty boot space and I've found with the previous systems, it's fun once in a while (really loud, as in other cars windows shake from the bass and your ears feel like they are going to bleed), but using that system like that all the time will definitely cause deafness and it's really bad manners anyway.

That's why I'm going for the JL, 600w RMS shallow mount sub is enough for me, plenty loud compared to any OEM system.

Btw. installing actual sound is piss easy. The hard part is selecting components and making the box because it's experience, you want cheap but good quality and decent SPL.

My friends generally ask me to do it because frankly doing a install well takes more than a day on most cars (even if you are more than one guy), I'm very meticulous. The wires have to run exactly how I want (I HATE car sound with alternator whine! And the install MUST leave a car looking completely OEM, I hate cut out boards, etc. I love it when you climb in think it's OEM and then BAM, 130dB baby), I always use new gold plated battery terminals, upgrade the alternator positive, engine ground and battery ground. Make sure the gains are properly set using frequency generator to test for clipping. But by far taking of panels and putting them back without losings screws or causing damage takes lots of time, especially small cars because everything inside has to go including the seats.

If you know your way around a multimeter, have wired a car radio before and understand the principles behind wiring speakers parallel or series, setting gains, etc. I suggest you do it yourself. Even the best installers go as quick as they can and that's when you start scratching, breaking, losing screws, etc.

I hear you. I have done a few systems of my own. my problem is the cost and the time. got a 15 month old baby and he demands alot of my time. thats another reason why i wanna go simple and use a sealed box. it should gimme plenty bass cos the sub is also 600rms.
 
Yeah plenty enough for daily drive! And I hear you on the baby thing, brother and sister both have started having kids recently (youngest sibling has 10 years on me), I'm just glad it's not me, they ain't getting much sleep or personal time.

Hehe, yeah that always happens, my Sister works @ Unisa and she initially put in for 3/4 of a year vacation (paid, I'm not sure how it works but she got it :whistle: Government institutions :o ).

Anyway after 6 months she decided she's had enough. Now the kid goes to a day care (9 months old now) thing in the day which is apparently very good. They have a online website where you can monitor the children and she's stopped by randomly and apparently they are very good. Baby's also learned things from other children (good things like hand eye coordination type stuff and so forth).

Brother has someone looking at the kid during the day, but overall I see my sisters daughter looks very happy whereas my brothers daughter sometimes seems a bit starved for attention, she doesn't get to play with children her age enough IMHO (she is a little attention whore tho :p ).

Bleh, anyway good luck with that ;)
