Hi all,

I have a customer who created an admin account with a password in Windows 8 to prevent unauthorized software installations etc.

He has now forgotten the admin password and needs to install some Security software on his PC. As I am unfamiliar with Win 8, is there a way to retrieve the password? Or over-ride it?

I know about the "X" number of enteries before a password reminder comes up...but he still seems not to know what it is...?

Fundis please help!

How dof do you have to be to forget your password? (Unless you rarely use it)

I think that is a bit harsh and rude to the individual.

If you don't use your admin password often you may forget it especially if you haven't written it down or saved somewhere other than the PC in question.

To all those that provided possible solutions, thank you. Your help is valuable..

Have it all the time. Use Hiren's Boot CD - it includes an offline XP/Win7 password changer, this works as well on Win8.

Not sure about Win10... will have to wait and see.

It's possible to reset it if your customer have his Microsoft email account linked to his Windows 8.1 user account.

Found a new one, uses the windows disc, if you don't want to download new software:

Method:
Step 1. Restart Windows with the windows disk in the DVD-Rom.
Step 2. Boot from the windows 7 disk.
Step 3. Press Shift and F10 on the install screen to open command prompt.
Step 4. type “regedit” to open the registry editor.
Step 5. Select local machine and go to file and then select load hive.
Step 6. browse to your system file in the config folder and open it.
Step 7. type in any key name (we used test2)
Step 8. expand local host and test2 key
Step 9. Select setup and right click setup type.
Step 10. Right click setup type and modify the value data to 2 and hex selected.
Step 11. Right click “cmdLine” and modify value data to “cmd.exe”.
Step 12. Select test2 go to file and exit.
Step 13. VERY IMPORTANT! type “regedit” again and make sure test 2 is selected.
Step 14. Go to file and select unload hive.
Step 15. File exit and close all the windows and let windows boot up.
Step 16. Type in net user (your username) * and press enter.
IMPORTANT: If you do not know the username, type in “net user” and press enter, a list of all users on that computer will be displayed.
Step 17. Enter a new password and confirm it.
Step 18. Optional if you want to create a new user account, enter net user (new user account name) /add
Step 19. Optional for the new user account, enter net user (new user account name) *
Step 20. Optional enter a password for the new user account and confirm it.
Step 21. Type exit.
Step 22. Well done, now enter your new password for the user account and log in (if you typed in one) you may also leave the password blank if no minimum requirements was set up previously.

All I can say is joh:

You don't know much about windows 8 (also never heard of Google) and you are helping a customer which implies this person is actually paying you?

Wow
