Why Google Must Die

Why Google Must Die

Once you learn how Google handles SEO, you see that getting the right results takes a miracle.

by John C. Dvorak

It's called SEO—search engine optimization—and it's pretty much all anyone working with Web sites ever talks about nowadays. You may think it consists of ways to trick the search engines, Google in particular, into giving you higher than usual page rankings. But in fact, it centers around the idea that Google sucks so much that companies think they need to use SEO to get the results they deserve.

By reverse-engineering the way Google operates, SEO experts can see how the process works. From a user's perspective, once you learn how Google does what it does, it's a miracle that you ever get the right results. And from my experience, the right results in many circumstances are nearly impossible to obtain—and may never be obtainable in the future.

Let's look at some of the problems that have developed over the years...

Am I the only one who finds Google scary?

Been like this for a while, been using it for my "Customized IT search engine" for months now.

Did that and I still don't get it ?

If you are logged in, next to your search results are some new icons.
Next to the title/link of each search result is an arrow pointing up, for 'promote' the result,
a 'x' for remove result and next the 'similar pages' link is a comment bubble so you can comment on the result...

A lot of people are complaining about this new feature, mainly because you don't have an 'opt out' option for those that didn't want the feature.

Google contends that the tool makes searches more useful because users can benefit from community edits of search results. Although this may be true, the problem is that the Comment section in particular, can be easily abused. What's to stop spammers from leaving irrelevant info in the comments of a popular website for marketing purposes? Also, once a lot of comments are added to a specific website in the search results, it will leave your Google search result page cluttered.
There are pros and cons to this new feature and it should be up to the user to decide whether he/she wants it enabled or not.

In the meantime, there are workarounds (other than logging out of your Google account) to turn off the feature. I'm sure they'll eventually incorporate the option to turn it off for users that want it.

If you do not see the comments in normal searches, like it is at the moment, without asking for them specifically, like you need to do at the moment as well, how will the page be cluttered?
