So I went online to see when my galaxy S3 will get KitKat and was unhappy to find out that the answer was never.

The most recent update was such a bloated monstrosity that I continuously ran out of memory.

I looked into CyanogenMod and they have made an idiot friendly way to ROM the phone.

Within a couple of minutes the phone was back up and running and I have set it up just the way I like it. No bloatware and it runs buttery smooth. As it stands with all the app's I used originally, the phone is using under 500mb.

I highly recommend CyanogenMod to anybody who wants their S3 to run like lightning again.:D

I got bored of CM's simplicity after a while.

I used to get better FPS in games on Samsung based ROMs over CM ROM's on my S3. Also the CM or ASOP camera is shyte.

CM is great until the novelty finally wears off. :o

Been running CM since version 10, just keeps getting better. Can't see myself using any other ROM unless I'm forced to.

I'm using the new Google Camera which is pretty sweet, also very simple but unless you have a high-end camera phone there is not really any need for much else.

The google camera is great, but doesn't take advantage of Samsung's image processing unit, so images show significantly more articting and poor quality in comparison to those taken with the Samsung camera app.

That reason alone is why I left ASOP ROMs.

There's always issues with these custom ROMs, just go to the last page of any XDA custom ROM thread and there's a ton of comments for "please help, my phone is in bootloop", "please help, phone does not turn on", "please help, opening camera app causes reboot", etc.

Used a custom ROM for a brief time, but now back on the manufacturer/original ROMs, as the 4.1.2 ROM on my S2 is simply exceptional. Rock solid and absolutely 0 problems.

The official 4.3 ROM on my Note 2 was just as good, and most probably even better with 4.4.2 .

For me CM improved my Note 2. After experiencing Android on a Nexus 7 2013 (which I won here :) ) I wanted that stripped down OS without all the bloat.

It's weird because I have the exact opposite experience. The 4.1.2 official Samsung rom is horrible for me, I've tried both the European version and the ZA version and both are laggy and huge battery hogs. Maybe my S2 is different for some reason but CM11 (using Kit Kat) runs exceptionally smooth for me and battery life is excellent.

The added bonus of course is you get the latest Android versions with CM. I'm already running 4.4.3 on my S2 and it was only released for Nexus devices a few days ago.

I also much prefer the stock Android experience. Also, regarding the better image processing on the stock camera apps mentioned earlier I don't see this at all with the S2, it probably only makes a difference on some of the newer phones.

to be fair I had loads of issues with ROMs with my S2 as well. cm at the time caused me no ends of pain. This is what made me weary of CyanogenMod but after reading that the bloated mess that Samsung left me was the end of the road, I decided to try it again. it has definitely become more user friendly.

I have disabled all Samsung apps and other bloatware (which are much less than with the newer phones) and the phone's battery life and performance are simply exceptional.

Will not use a custom ROM on it again.

Right now I'm thinking of using this phone for another two years! :)

Installed the latest nightly build on my LG P970 last night. The performance is great and the battery life has improved beyond belief.

I'm sticking with it, without a doubt. :D

If you use GPS often also make sure that you set it to battery saving mode when you're not actually using it for directions. This will save you a lot of battery if you use location based options a lot.

Samsung based ROMs are the best. CM or ASOP ROMs can't communicate with Samsung hardware properly, so it will never be as efficient.

Yet somehow CM11 runs smoother, faster and more efficiently than any previous Samsung ROM on my S2. I find it odd why Samsung cannot get this right when they've designed the phone and as you say have the correct drivers, etc.

I did have camera issues with versions prior to CM11, where video camera recording would not always work and cause the camera to fc and not work again until a reboot. Since CM11 I have none of these issues any more.

Still they're software enhancements, which circumvent the hardware processor unfortunately.

Thank you. Will check and set it accordingly. I tend not to use my GPS for directions, no. Appreciate the advice.

Exactly my reasoning as well.

It's always poorly written apps, or gazillion sync operations that causes a phone to "slow down or not buttery smooth".

The funny thing is that owners install any crap app they can find on their phones (with official rom) and then complain how slow and stuttering it is.

Then they install a custom ROM and almost no apps, and say how "smooth" and responsive the phone is. :p
