CyanogenMod rocks

CM really is the vanilla of ROMs. Stable but featureless and boring. Its for the masses.

Cm is cool. Gives you a refreshingly different change and awesome battery life

Any phone can give you awesome battery life if you just leave it on standby the whole day.

But I wonder how battery life will be on cyanogenmod when you watch lots of videos, play music, radio, lots of phone calls, etc.

Cos that's what I do with my S2 and the official Samsung 4.1.2 XFA ROM is just brilliant.

CM is cool, but I could never get the camera working properly and my battery life was worse running custom ROM's

Does it matter where the benefits lie when the benefits are tangible to the end user?

Yes, Hardware > software. Usually those that flash custom ROMs are high-end users, and performance is usually key with that market.

I have yet to see a CM or ASOP ROM beat a Samsung based stock ROM in battery life or performance benchmarks.

I should have done proper some tests last time I had the official ROM installed. Call me crazy but I cannot fathom how some of you guys get good battery life with the stock ROM, for me it's day and night difference when going from stock to CM11, they aren't even close. I can literally see the battery percentage dropping when using the stock ROM.

Did you guys install this international version below?

Mine is the opposite way around. Stock ROM gives great battery life but with CM the battery drains so much faster.

I wonder if it has anything to do with which network you're on. Might be that differences in the radios are showing different results due to this?

Read the Wiki. Nightly builds are like betas and not recommended for everyone. Stable releases are more suited for everyone. If you don't mind possibly borking your phone then you can install the nightly.

I'm quoting the Wiki. So feel free to go and correct them then.

I am stuck on step 4:

The error that I receive from CMD:
E:\Program Files\Heimdall Suite>heimdall flash --R
.4.6-i9300.img --no-reboot
Heimdall v1.4.0

ERROR: Failed to access device. libusb error: -12

I have googled and none of the solutions have worked for me so far.

My upgrade also failed. Best to do a factory reset on the phone first and remove all Samsung software on your PC incl USB drivers.

Ended up having to do the manual install. Some of the instructions were wrong or out of order. Luckily I had the Android SDK on my PC.

Note 2.

Hmm, that's not step 4.

This is step 4 according to the wiki:

Windows (only) driver installation - Skip this step if you are using Linux or Mac
A more complete set of the following instructions can be found in the Zadig User Guide.
Run zadig.exe from the Drivers folder of the Heimdall Suite.
Choose Options » List All Devices from the menu.
Select Samsung USB Composite Device or MSM8x60 or Gadget Serial or Device Name from the drop down menu. (If nothing relevant appears, try uninstalling any Samsung related Windows software, like Samsung Windows drivers and/or Kies).
Click Replace Driver (having selecting "Install Driver" from the drop down list built into the button).
If you are prompted with a warning that the installer is unable to verify the publisher of the driver, select Install this driver anyway. You may receive two more prompts about security. Select the options that allow you to carry on.

Sorry, never used Heimdall on Windows.

Why don't you just use the CM installer for Windows: http://beta.download.cyanogenmod.org/install ?

Let's put it to the test. I'm running Samsung stock 4.4.2 on a Galaxy S4. Anyone else running CM11 on a S4? Here's recent battery stats.

Jeez, how do even manage to use your screen for 6 hours in a day! :D

I went over 10 hours of screen-on time when reading a book on my Note 2 (Google Books). *Official Samsung 4.3 XFA ROM.

It can be done, but extremely impressive for a Galaxy S4!!

^^^ Might be easier to use ODIN to install CWM. Once CWM in installed you reboot the phone into CWM (like a basic menu system) from which you can install custom roms (download the latest .zip from cyanogenmod site).

I did my ROM flash through Clockwork as well. Courtesy of the great guy who gifted me the phone originally. It's much easier than flashing via a PC.
