In the last few days I haven't been able to browse via my normal proxy:
dsl-cache.saix.net:8080

I just get the msg: "Forbidden
You were denied access because:
Access denied by access control policy. "

This doesn't happen on my pre-paid webafrica account. Is it just me, or is this a new thing?

None of these proxies that used to work before, work anymore...
dsl-cache.saix.net:8080 (196.25.253.13:8080)
cache.telkomsa.net:8080
cache.saix.net:8080
cache.saix.co.za:3128

You are using Cybersmart’s bandiwth to get from your home to SAIX/Telkom(proxy) then back to Cybersmart and out again if content is not cached on SAIX/Telkom.
Not good for Cybersmart to pay for you doubling up on local bandwidth on the IPC so it’s blocked.

Maybe it's because CyberSmart themselves aren't forcing users through their proxy anymore.

Some kind of protest against proxies?

Ah so using a proxy is bad?

No, not bad per se. But these saix proxies are a pain and I cannot wait for the day when I get the chance to throw a grenade into that server room. They mess things like crazy for me on a daily basis and also eg. "block" people in SA using Rapidshare properly.

Yes I wanted to say the same thing! Cybersmart and SAOL isn't forcing people through transparent proxies anymore! About a month ago i started to notice it. They have completely removed the transparent proxy. Which is actually quite nice. Only ISP that does this I think!

Oh, hmph! Didn't even realise how it all worked, I just knew that browsing the internet was noticeably faster that way. Especially during the day, there's a huge difference!

I've been doing it this way for years now, and now all of a sudden my connection is back to being very unresponsive again :( I'm not sure if it's the actual download speeds, but rather the time it takes to connect to a URL.

If I understand correctly, the reason it was way faster is because most the sites I visited were cached by the proxy... (obviously that being the whole point of a proxy hehe :P). But umm, I want that back! Would I have to go with another ISP then?

SAOL are cheap bastards. On telkom accounts I get a 20 ping to saix gaming servers, on SAOL I get a 100 ping to saix gaming servers. When I phone SAOL they just put the blame on me and insist I buy their Unshaped account to fix the problem.

I hear you man. Cybersmart too! Ping is always 100ms+ but when i use my Telkom Shaped account I get a ping less than 60ms. And beleive it my cybersmart account is unshapped!

SAOL and CyberSmart provide the upstream bandwidth themselves so they are their own bottleneck. Far better to use Axxess or WebAfrica and get a SAIX shapped account from them.

I believe CyberSmart and SAOL are owned by the same person. SAOL was sold a little while ago to CyberSmart's owner.

The advantage is you get bandwidth cheaper?<i think thats why discrepancy with line speed> I am interested to see how this plays out post june this yr when isp's etc can by leased lines for a lot cheaper.

Correct! SAIX rulez when it comes to speed. Plus they have the funds to keep it going !!!!!!
