Hey Guys,

So as we all know, ADSL prices are falling faster than we can change police commissioners! I was just wondering if anyone has switched from Cybersmart (who I'm currently with) over to Afrihost? I currently have a 1MB unshaped and uncapped line but am thinking of moving over to Afrihost's 4MB uncapped and SHAPED line. Moving to Afrihost will mean that I save R200 a month! According to the Afrihost support staff, the shaped lines are actually unshaped and you are only throttled once you reach the 20% users mark which is about 100GB - can anyone confirm this? I'll be using the line for a bit of gaming, more for emails and browsing as well as for media and downloading torrents etc.

So my actual question is, is there any reason why I shouldn't move across to Afrihost? How is the support, does Afrihost crash regularly.. Etc any info would be helpful. NB I'm extremely happy with cybersmart and their support, it's just the price factor which is attracting me to Afrihost now.

Thanks in advance.

I am in the process of moving from Cybersmart 1mb uncapped to Afrihost uncapped as well.

Had a capped account with Afrihost which was good. I know its not the same as uncapped. Well if that does not work out there are other ISPs.

The main reason to move was the lack of support. My mails to support were always answered a day later. Hoping that support at Afrihost is better.

Afrihost and Axxess both answer your emails and tickets very quickly, they dont just sit around and do nothing like the people at Telkom.

My 4meg's at 170ish gig for the month and no slowdowns in sight

Playing World of Warcraft and D3 online, torrents, usenet, direct downloading. Not going nuts :)

Just to clarify, it seems like there is confusion between shaping and throttling. Normal uncapped accounts are shaped, which means that we prioritise traffic. Normal protocols (HTTP, FTP, SMTP, etc) get more priority (ie. faster speeds) than non-regular protocols (torrents, P2P, nntp). We only throttle accounts (directly limit throughput) when a user exceeds the threshold.

The 20% policy is no longer in effect, it is based purely on whether usage exceeds a threshold, based on network capacity. You could use more than 200GB before hitting a throttle.
