Im currently paying about R250 a month with my ISP for my Home384 access with a 2GB cap... not much to shout about. I was thinking of changing to Cybersmart ( https://www.cybersmart.co.za/index.cgi ), but I really dont know how they will compare to the other ISP's out there?

Could someone offer some advice... worth changing?

Im currently with Xsinet

For 1/2 the price you get a gig more. Ad R21.00 and it rolls over to a limit of 15 gig.

Need I say more?

point taken...

thanks man

But are we comparing apples with apples here? I dont wanna change and then find that the speeds are not good. I mean, I have never heard of Cybersmart...

isn't Xsinet IS-based? i.e it comes with 27gb local after your cap.. if you like that, then go with www.openweb.co.za - much cheaper..

or maybe CS do SAIX and IS accounts.

if you pay R250 for 2GB SAIX then definately change to CyberSmart. i've never heard anything bad about them, after all they resell the exact accounts all other SAIX-based ISPs sell..

I changed a little while ago.
I don't have any problems.

all SAIX/IS accounts are the same.. i.e same speed.. only difference is the cap sizes, of course

IS based

Yes Xsinet is IS based... but that doesnt really affect me at all. Im not into downloading huge ammounts of stuff... mostly music etc.

So the question is, I assume CS is Saix based? Maybe with the price decrease I will be able to get Home512 instead? :p

What you guys recon? (CunderT whips out the calculator!)

not a bad idea. i'm thinking of going 512k since the upload rates on 384k have been limited to 128k. i used to get 30 - 35KB/s upload speeds :(

PLEASE dont tell me you have been uploading at 30KB/s on a 384 line... surely thats not possible!?

I have a 384 line and Im getting 30-40 KB/s on Ares.. not bad I reckon!

I've not had any problems since moving over to them last dec.

problems

Well Im glad I have looked into this whole ADSL pricing thing... turns out I have been paying more than I should, in more than one way! Yes my current ISP is expensive, but it turns out that I have been overcharged some some time! Im not happpy at all...

So Im cancelling and going to order Cybersmart. I'll let you all know how it goes, coz im not really happy now... im actually annoyed!

Anyway...

R250 for 2gb is a rip off ja (esp for IS, i mean im paying the same for 3gb with 128k openbrowse) but also remember cybersmart is a special case, offering different prices for different speeds. AFAIK the cheapest "normal" saix 3gb account is webafrica's

edit: according to Hellkom there are cheaper 3gb packages but im too lazy to check if they're IS or SAIX :P

OK, now this all makes sense. Seems there is more than meets the eye when it comes to by monthly ISP bill. Im paying for 4 MAILBOXES, and they hold 30MB each. ALso got a domain, which have email addresses on that domain, so this is why I have such a high account. I checked, and my ADS contribution is R184 for 2GB. That better than R250!

Anyway, im sticking with them, coz the price difference isnt actually that big and its going to be a mission to switch!

Just to change topics quick, how worth while is this whole IS "news server", coz I had a quick look and its not looking great at all... and it was complicated and slow! Around 10 KB/s max I got

Well that does make for interesting reading... Looks like I jumped on the wagon a bit late. the people who found out this news server stuff in the first place should have just kept it to themselves and enjoyed it. Not its stuffed up, and im pretty sure it is because every tom, **** and harry is trying to download everything he can click on! :D

Well, I did try the other night, and it looked quite comlicated, and I did manage to download an MP3, but it was pathetically slow, and Its far easier to just use P2P or something like that. So I feel for all of you who have experienced the true speed and now have to settle with the "new" speed... even after the telkom "upgrade"

Yeah... so I'll just be sticking to ARES thanks.

Now someone can tell me why our operator (dearest Telkom) choose to charge us when the international standard is no charge? Only the ISP is supposed to charge!
