Cyclic Redundency Error

Hi guys

I tried to copy a dvd of mines onto my pc, but i got the dreaded cyclic redundancy error:mad:

Granted, the dvd has some scratches and stuff on it. My dvd drive is a benq dw2000 (i think), and its about 6 months old.

However, i took the dvd to work to try it on my work pc (samsung writemaster), and the dvd copied just fine. But, my work dvd rom is pretty much F'ed up! Cause it doesnt burn dvds anymore, barely reads them in fact, and the cds it burns are also startin to produce errors.

My question is, how can a new dvd rom drive give a CRC error on my dvd, but my half dead work-dvd rom is reading the dvd just fine?

i believe there are different lasers for reading and burning. So the reading laser can be fine while the burning one is totally screwed.

The problem is certain drives are better at handling errors than others, read speed plays a factor also. If you set read spead to 1x your chances are better at error free extraction than x16 for example.

Personally only buy LG drives and so far haven't had any trouble as far as those problems go.

Btw. CD-RW drives are better at extracting data from damaged CD's than DVD-RW drives, almost all of the time.

Well there you go.

Damn you're fast, I edited that out, I don't see a source that confirms my theory or disproves it(but I'm 80% sure tho), but as far as I remember there is only one. I have a broken DVD-+RW around but disassembling it is too much effort ;)

So yeah it comes down to some drives being better at reading certain media than others, it's just one of those things :)

I have a person I know who knows such things. He says same laser, different strengths for writing and reading. of course i am no saying he is foolproof.

Actually, in my experience with tons of people including myself, it seems that LG drives have been the only drives to be giving this problem. My Samsung drives work beautifully.

Try it on other drives, just make sure you clean it with someone thing, what I do is wet 'soft' toliet paper just lightly and clean it closewise then i put it in and copy the stuff over and toss the disk.

You can however take it to say, a Mr Video, my ex's video store had this 'machine' or whatever that 'repaired' DVD's.

If the data is important enough, take it, pay to have it 'fixed' - take it home, copy the stuff and toss the disk and reburn it :D

And remember Peerie; Tea can do that! :D

You need to get some other drive. My Samsung writemasters are the best drives I've bought yet. The older Samsung's were very dodgy but these new ones are superb.

Lol, ok, I'm from Cape Town so I can't direct you to any store, but I'm sure you'll find it. Stick to a good brand like Samsung WriteMaster, then you'll know you're getting good quality.
