Production-Spec Czinger 21C Hypercar Revealed With Record Breaking Performance

Remember the wild-looking 21C hypercar by Czinger that made waves last year? Well, it is back and it is in production spec.

The 21C is the first model in a series of exclusive performance vehicles and will be limited to just 80 units worldwide. Additive manufacturing technologies were used for each component and was computationally engineered using AI.

Since its introduction in 2021, the car has received some significant updates such as an increase in width to 2,050 metres. Since it packs 1,250 PS (1,233 hp; 919 kW) and features a dry weight of under 1,240 kg, the 21C achieves a true 1:1 power-to-weight ratio. It also features all-wheel drive with a strong hybrid powertrain.

This powertrain consists of an in-house developed 2.88-litre, flat crank V8 with twin turbos located mid-vehicle which works in conjunction with two high output electric motors, each powering a front wheel with torque vectoring. The total output as previously mentioned is 1,233 hp (919 kW) but this can be cranked up to 1,332 hp (993 kW) with an optional power upgrade.

Czinger shows off 3D-printed hybrid hypercar in final production spec

Czinger is rewriting the rule book on how to build cars. The California-based company first unveiled a prototype version of its 21C hypercar in March 2020 prior to the canceled Geneva International Motor Show, and now we finally get to see it in full production guise.

Only 80 units of its halo model will be built and each component manufactured uses technology that was computationally engineered using Artificial Intelligence, optimised for weight and performance, and finished by hand. The hypercar is designed, built, and manufactured in Los Angeles. It features an inline seating configuration for two people.

Czinger says the latest version is wider, at 2 050 mm and has a dry weight of just 1 240 kilograms. For the record, it’s powered by an in-house 2,88-litre, flat-crank V8 twin turbo motor (with a redline of 11,000 r/min!). The combustion motor can use several types of fuels, including carbon recycled methanol and other e-fuels, so it can be run as a zero emission vehicle.

In addition to the mid-mounted engine there are two high output electric motors, each powering a front wheel with torque vectoring, total output from the hybrid system is 932 kW. The result is a power-to-weight ratio that hits the magical 1:1. It sends power to the rear axle via a seven-speed sequential transaxle gearbox with a hydraulic actuated multi-plate clutch.

US firm's 1233bhp hybrid V8-powered debut model beats McLaren Senna's lap time by more than two seconds

New US company Czinger's debut model, the radical 21C hypercar, has beaten the production car lap record at California's Laguna Seca raceway by a considerable margin.

The 1233bhp hyper-hybrid was sent around the 2.24-mile course, with professional racer Joel Millar at the wheel, in just 1min 25.44secs, far outpacing the previous record of 1min 27.62secs set by the McLaren Senna in 2019. Conditions were described as "ideal" and the car used road-legal Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2R tyres.

The Laguna Seca record is the first, Czinger said, in a planned string of future performance record attempts. The 21C will now be prepared for a public appearance at Monterey Car Week from 12-16 August.

Limited to just 80 models, the Aston Martin Valkyrie rival is powered by an in-house-developed twin-turbo 2.88-litre flat-crank V8 that revs to 11,000rpm and sends its power to the rear wheels.

Czinger’s 21C hypercar laps Laguna Seca two seconds quicker than a McLaren Senna

California’s 3D-printed 1,233bhp hybrid hypercar has smashed Laguna’s lap record

Last year we brought you news of California’s Koenigsegg rival: the Czinger (silent C, pronounce it like the Tower Burger and different to the Porsche reimaginers) 21C. It’s a mad thing, notably, because it’s largely 3D-printed, has an 11,000rpm V8, a 1+1 layout and costs $1.7m. With such a crazy recipe it was easy to write the thing off as another fanciful bit of vapourware. But now the Californian car company has put its money where its mouth is and come out swinging – setting a new lap record at Laguna Seca and making a McLaren Senna look slow in the process.

Using the track-orientated version in a “High Downforce” configuration (650kg of downforce at 100mph and 2,500kg at 200mph, apparently) and on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2Rs (seemingly the road legal tyre choice for any lap record attempt nowadays) professional lapsmith Joel Miller lapped ‘that track with the corkscrew’ in a multi-GPS verified time of 1m 25:44s. Which is quick. Very quick.

It smashed the previous track record for a production car held by the McLaren Senna, with driver Randy Pobst behind the wheel. That duo managed a time of 1m 27.62s. But we’ve seen and driven a McLaren Senna on a road. We’re yet to do the same in a Czinger. Yet. Watch this space.

CZINGER 21C DRIVEN: ON THE ROAD IN A 1,233BHP V8 HYBRID SUPERCAR

A 3D printed hypercar with Laguna Seca lap record pedigree. We’re first to drive a very early prototype. Prepare for take-off

I feel my way in for half a lap, then start attacking a bit harder. Immediately the ragged edges are smoother, the gearbox works better, the steering gets more talkative and the aero starts to work, pinning you down in the faster sections. The manners might need refining, but the fundamentals are solid. The more confidence I find, the car matches and multiplies it. It’s up on its toes now, jinking and playing. The engine lights the afterburners on the straights, but prefers a lower gear and all the revs in the slower stuff (first gear runs all the way to 75mph). We’re too used to instant torque these days, this requires more flogging, but get it right and the results are predictably eye-popping. Out here, chasing lap times not traffic lights, is where the 21C was born to be and in a moment, none of the false starts and mechanical hiccups matter. It’s simply a privilege to be tearing up the track, chasing the embers of the day, in something as genetically advanced as this.

Early next year a heavily updated 21C V2.0 prototype will be built – that means a new gearbox, rebuilt engine, carbon tub and as many cracks ironed out as possible. It’s a mighty undertaking, but the idea it represents and the inspiration behind it sets it apart from the vapourware pack. There are flickers of genius here and a road map to production, which is why I leave with ears ringing, hands tingling and hope. Imagine what it’ll be like when it’s finished.

Czinger 21C hypercar confirmed for UK debut at Goodwood

New American manufacturer also appoints HR Owen as UK dealer for 1233bhp V8-engined hyper-hybrid

New American company Czinger's debut model, the radical 21C hypercar, will make its UK dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June.

The announcement comes as Czinger appoints high-end car dealer HR Owen as the exclusive UK retailer for the 21C and other upcoming Czinger models, ahead of deliveries of the hypercar getting under way in 2023.

This will be the 21C's second high-profile outing on track, having already beaten the production car lap record at California's Laguna Seca Raceway by a considerable margin in 2021.

Czinger 21C V Max: 1233bhp hypercar gets long-tailed variant

American start-up gunning for speed records with latest variant of ultra-fast V8 hypercar

American hypercar start-up Czinger has launched a sleeker, low-drag version of its already uber-fast 1233bhp Czinger 21C.

Designed with a slippery body and “sculpted to produce the lowest coefficient of drag possible”, the 21C V Max is an “8.0sec quarter mile” car, said company owner Kevin Czinger, with stylings based on the iconic Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird aircraft.

Revealed at Monterey Car Week, it has been created for “ultimate speed”, he said, adding that the design “is form-follows-function” with the car looking like it does based on track data and a push for stability at high speed.

The V Max differs from the standard 21C with an array of aerodynamic parts removed, such as a huge rear wing and large front splitter, in favour of an extended and aerodynamic-driven tail.

Czinger reveals $1m Hyper GT with 1233bhp V8 and gullwing doors

Czinger claims the new Hyper GT, which joins the 21C hypercar, is “the most powerful grand tourer ever produced”

American hypercar start-up Czinger has revealed “the most powerful grand tourer ever produced” to join its uber-fast 21C hypercar, as it pushes to become an established car maker with “a portfolio like Lamborghini”.

Named the Czinger Hyper GT, the two-door, four-seat saloon concept will get the same 1233bhp twin-turbocharged 2.88-litre hybridised V8 engine as the more track-focussed 21C, which will be mounted at the front.

Complete with gullwing doors, 3D printed wheels, and camera-operated side mirrors, it commands a hefty price tag of between $750,000 (£613,260) and $1 million (£817,680), but it will be much higher-volume than the 21C, as Czinger plans to build 1000 examples at its headquarters in Los Angeles

Dubbed “functional art”, the GT sits in a “new category”, according to owner Kevin Czinger, who, along with son and company co-owner Lukas, revealed their new offering at Monterey Car Week, along with the new Czinger 21C V Max.

At the front, LEDs surround the bottom of the grille, with a low slung, wide nose. A long sloping roofline defines the car’s silhouette, with a high splitter and honeycomb bodystyling rounding off the rear end. The roof also doubles as a window.

“We are using the design language of the 21C, so people will see it as a Czinger vehicle,” said Kevin Czinger.

The Czinger Hyper GT Is a Four-Seat, Gullwing Door Hypercar

The Hyper GT is the second model from the California-based company that plans to 3D print a Hypercar.

Despite the fact that Czinger has yet to deliver a single example of its two-seat 21C hypercar, it already has a second model in the works. Dubbed the Hyper GT, this fella goes in a completely different direction than the 21C.

The new vehicle was previewed at The Quail over the weekend. Unlike the 3D printed 21C’s tandem two-seat design, the Hyper GT will have room for four passengers inside its gullwing doors. The company says the occupants will be able to travel in luxury at speed, with no loss of performance. However, we’ll have to take Czinger’s word for it, since there aren’t any interior renderings to go along with the release.

Power will come courtesy of an in-house designed hybrid powertrain. Right now, exact spec numbers aren’t available. That being said, the smart money is on the idea that the Hyper GT will share a drivetrain with the 21C. It’s a pretty gnarly engine, though. It’s a 2.88-liter, flat plane crank, twin-turbo-V8 bolted to an 800 volt electric drive and regen system, according to Czinger.

The problem with a 1,233bhp V8 hybrid hypercar like the Czinger 21C is, well, it’s just a little bit slow isn’t it? Granted, a 0-62mph time of 1.9 seconds and a top speed of around 235mph might not sound all that pedestrian, but there’s always room for more.

Welcome then, to the Czinger 21C V Max.

Now, this iteration of the wild 3D printed hypercar uses the same powertrain as the bewinged car we drove back in December 2021. That means a 2.9-litre V8 that revs to 11,000rpm powers the rear axle, while two electric motors power the front for four-wheel drive and the aforementioned total of 1,233bhp.

However, almost all of the exterior aero addendums have been removed to create the V Max. There’s no rear wing and no winglets above the front splitter – instead you get slippery carbon wheel covers and a properly swoopy longtail that gives this LA-born hypercar proper McLaren Speedtail vibes.

The 1,233bhp Czinger 21C will now use a McLaren inverter

McLaren Applied to supply next-gen carbide inverters for US hybrid hypercar

American hypercar company Czinger has announced that the inverters used in its 1,233bhp hybrid 21C model will come from a small company called ‘McLaren’.

More specifically, McLaren Applied, the tech arm of one of Britain’s most famous supercar manufacturers. The inverter in question is McLaren’s ‘IPG5’ 800V silicon carbide version, a next-gen unit weighing just 5.5kg and able to be conveniently stuffed inside a 3.79-litre box.

The IPG5 unit is able to power electric motors to over 350kW peak, and 250kW continuous, and McLaren says it’s been designed specifically for cars “including direct drive”. And the material is of key importance here.
