I'm probably going to buy one.

Features:
ADSL2/2+ Modem Integrated
Wireless G (54 Megabit)
4-port Ethernet Switch
QoS and Firewall protection
Supports UPnP

R600 from PC Direct

1) Is the D-Link firmware good? If not, is there any custom firmware available?

2) Is there any better alternative router/modem combos with QoS available under R1000?

3) Any comments at all?

The standard firmware is fine. Depends on what you need I guess.

Haven't tried the QoS on it but on the whole its fairly solid. The ethernet ports are slightly sensitive to surges I think. Chances are you will not have 4 ethernet ports left by the end of year 1.

I've got a netgear router now (DGN2000) and on the whole I prefer the 2640.

It doesn't do gigabit speeds though so if you need that pick something else.

My 2c ... I had a Billion router before this one, but wanted the wireless upgrade. So far (more than a year now) not a single problem with it :)

Oki maybe it is like half a cent - but just a nod of confidence.

I've sold this one to many clients, and I use it myself.

100% awesome :)

(Just wish they still came with the removable antenna!)

If you are going to buy the D-Link 2640U, you should know that you CAN enable PPPoE Relaying/Passthrough, simply by adding a WAN Bridging interface if the PPPoE interface already exists.

I haven't tried setting up QoS on the router yet, but don't expect too much from it.

You may have to upgrade the firmware to a newer version once you got the router though.

Also used it.

Feature rich, great router!

However, mine started overheating (I keep it on permanently), one that happens, DSL does not sync. Switch it off for 15 minutes and off I go again :)

I read about the overheating problem on another forum, it is solved by just buying a vertical stand for the router.

Kept mine on 24/7 too months on end. Never had a heat issue. In fact the netgear I currently have gets at least twice as hot (i.e. scary hot).

Cool, thanks.

Yeah, mine used to work just fine for months on end. Must have started after the firmware upgrade I did on it (which cannot be downgraded....doh:mad: )

I've just found out that there is a DSL-2740U available... PCFormat had it and gave it one of their gold award thingies. Any comments on this new model?

Nice router, , nice price, a breeze to setup.

You might need some of this info:

PPPoE (for an always on connection) or Bridge mode if you want to dial-up from within your operating system
VPI - 8
VCI - 35
MTU - 1492
Multiplexing - LLC

Thanks, will those settings work with SAOL's Simply Uncapped deal? I will probably be using PPPoE, because it's uncapped. This will be my first experience with ADSL, so anyone else feel free to leave a hint.

Yip, they'll be the right settings.
