D-link issue (I think)

Hi there

I got a new D-link 2640U router last week, and got myself a 1 gig cap from Tigatel. I configured the modem with the settings sent to me by Tigatel. The DSL as well as the Internet light was on. Not flashing, but a steady green light. However, I got no internet activity (could not browse, etc.). I phoned Tigatel, and they said my cap was activated, and they could also see I was connecting to their server. I then took the modem to a computer shop to have it tested, thinking it could be my Telkom line. Exactly the same thing happened to them. So I got myself another 1 gig cap, this time from Afrihost. I still got the same problem. When I ran diagnostics on my modem, all tests passed, except the pinging primary Domain Name Server (DNS). I tried pinging both ISP's IPs when I activated their respective accounts, but got no answer from either of them. So the only place left for the problem to lie is in the router. Oh yeah, I also turned off the router's as well as my own firewall. Any help?

See if you can ping www.aardvark.co.za or just its IP address: 196.25.211.106
Code:
ping www.aardvark.co.za -t
Code:
ping 196.25.211.106 -t
If you can only ping the IP address, then your DNS server that you're using is either offline/overloaded or you simply have an incorrect DNS server IP address.
Instead you can use the Google DNS server address: 8.8.8.8

Hi Pada, i am using the google DNS even if i try open DNS or auto setting it does the same, my laptop on the wireless does not have a problem. What i do now when i have to reboot i disable the NIC and then just go and enable it again it the system properties and then i work.

@Vault_Dweller .. I have no idea

Edit: When i boot into Ubuntu all is fine, just win7 don't want to play nice

You are using windows right. My d-link doesn't want to work in normal modem mode.

So do this. Put the router in bridge mode. Then dial the connections from windows.

SETUP:
Your router should look like this under WAN:
http://digi8.co.za/filez/dlink1.png

Then in windows start> Connect To
http://digi8.co.za/filez/dlink2.png

Next
http://digi8.co.za/filez/dlink3.png

Select broadband (PPPoE)
http://digi8.co.za/filez/dlink4.png

Enter your log in details there:
http://digi8.co.za/filez/dlink5.png

And say connect. Now you should be able to connect. You will need to set a static ip in your lan adapter cause the router won't give you one. I selected 192.168.1.4
However this is NOT a MUST. You will still be able to connect if this is not set. Its just if you have more than one pc connected to LAN so the 2 pc's can transfer data to each other.

With this setup you need to dial a connection from each computer/laptop even if you use the wifi (if the router supports it)

If you get stuck just pm me.

Don't use Google/OpenDNS servers. Adds extra loading time to browsing. On some pages that can be substantial. Use a local DNS server instead. Either the one the ISP specified or SAIX or IS. http://www.saix.net/cgi-bin/saix_dns.pl

On that router you need to set VPI and CPI. It's 35 and 8, not sure which one is which. The 35 should already be set so just change the other one.

The router can also have multiple configs loaded, so reset it at the back with a paperclip and start from scratch.

The router self test thing gives bad info. It can fail tests even when everything is OK.

Do what pada said.
Code:
C:\Users\HX>ping aardvark.co.za

Pinging aardvark.co.za [[B]196.25.211.106][/B] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 196.25.211.106: bytes=32 time=108ms TTL=120
Reply from 196.25.211.106: bytes=32 time=80ms TTL=120
Reply from 196.25.211.106: bytes=32 time=81ms TTL=120
Bold part shows that DNS is resolving correctly.

The router should automatically configure DNS. But it does sound like DNS is the cause.

Also try accessing the ISP page...those are usually accessible even if their server isn't giving you access to cap.

You're right about the loading time, but to simply get the internet going its the quickest solution to use Google DNS since its so easy to remember the IP address :)
The VCI/VPI has to be set to 8/35 like HavocXphere said.

If you're having trouble with Windows 7, then it could perhaps be the IPv6 that's interfering. You're welcome to run 'ipconfig /all' in Windows 7's Command Prompt and to PM me the output. If you want to do proper diagnostics, you should send me the following:
in Windows's command prompt:
Code:
ipconfig /all
route print
in Linux/Ubuntu terminal:
Code:
ifconfig
route -n
cat /etc/resolv.conf

Good morning everyone! Straight to business:

I tried pinging website names and ip's, none work, not even one of my isp's ip's. However, when I pinged a website name, it gave me the website's ip. Don't know if it is a good thing.

Cavedog: I did everything you said, put it in bridge mode and then created a connection. It doesn't seem to work, although I've got a feeling we're on the right track. When I created the bridge connection, the internet light on the router went off, although the dsl light stayed on. When I dialled the connection, it connected successfully, but the internet light still stayed off, and I still couldn't surf.

Just a reminder, I've got Windows XP.

I took a few screenshots and put it on my flashdisk, but I forgot my flashdisk at home, so my bad there.

Oh yeah, forgot to add, but I am going to phone Telkom today to reset my line, I think it might be the line...

If the router is in bridge mode the internet light won't be on. It doesn't mean anything. If you are connected in windows and still can't browse. Its Either a DNS issue in which you can change to google DNS to see if it works or Its another problem relating to the ISP.

You've already established that DNS is working.

Have you activated your line already?

I've tried both ISP's DNS addresses, as well as the google one (8.8.8.8), and it still doesn't work. Telkom phoned me last week and said my line was activated. One of my ISPs says I connect to their server, and my router info shows downstream 4096 and upstream 512, so I assume something is working. However, when I tried to use my home phone last after they activated my line, there was no dial tone, so I asked them to fix it, which they did. Don't know of it has any significance...

Did you do this?

Vault_Dweller, you have to visit that site from your home for it to verify your line.
