I have a D-Link 1040 print server connected by USB to a Samsung Laser printer.

It was a little difficult to get the wireless working but it is working now; I can get into the web interface and I even have "Printer Online" as the status of the printer along with the correct printer name.

So why is it that I can't print to the printer?

It is very difficult to install the printer but there is a TCP/IP port in Windows and Mac accepts the ip address as valid. Windows can't quite get the printer to be online but Mac says it is.

I can't tell if I am not installing correctly or if the issue is between the printer and server. It would help if the print server had a test print function. Anyway, anyone have any suggestions for troubleshooting?

I've got the wired version of this connected to a very old line printer.

I assume you have the drivers for the printer installed. Do you have the printer networking drivers installed?

Oh there is a test page function and it doesn't print - since I installed the drivers to the print server (I think; I used the printer setup facility on the print server) this should work, right?

So why doesn't it print?

Well I have the drivers installed - on the computer I am printing from and (I assume) on the print server. There are no networking drivers for the printer (hence the print server).

Ok. With the DLink software, did you "link" the device to the printer? (it may not be called 'link', but there is a button where you can link/pair the device to the printer) With the IP you have from the print server, add a new printer in Windows using it. Install the drivers for the printer (lan drivers) and see if it connects.

Mine was as easy as plugging in, waiting for the DLink software to find the device, hit the link button, use the Print Server IP to install a new printer in Windows and used the printer vendors drivers. I don't remember trying to print from the DLink software or installing drivers on it.

edit: what Samsung printer is it?

No there is not a button to connect the printer. It has PnP.

There is both a web interface from which I can print a test page and also a useless Windows software which doesn't seem to do much except connect to the print server and give its status.

It's a Samsung CLP310.

Oh yeah that's pretty much what I have done in as many different ways as I can think of. I also tried using both LPD and IPP on a Mac.

I think the issue is between the D-Link and the printer though seeing as the test page that came directly from the D-Link didn't print.

On the home page of the D-LInk PS Web interface, there's a setup link, that will download a small app from the PS.. With that App you just click next and it will search for your printer and automatically configure it for you (set ip/ports etc)

If you cant find the link for the app I can upload it for you..

Yes but the printer is all set up. I have run the app (annoying that it is an .exe and doesn't run on Mac). The printer is "online" and I can connect to the PS but I still can't communicate with the printer itself.

oops. sorry missed the part about you using a Mac..

I haven't used a Mac before (ipad/ipod doesn't count :) ).. But see if you can configure the port with the these settings or something similar..

Ip address: PS IP

Protocol: LPR

Under LPR Settings
Queue Name: This You'll get from the printer server web interface, click status, and next to printer name

example: Queue Name: dlk-16A507-U1

Thanks but I have tried all that. Actually the thing supposedly supports LPR and IPP and I have tried both with Mac and Windows. I have run the .exe, installed the drivers directly etc etc but to no avail. So I sent it back.
