The Democratic Alliance has expressed that Telkom needs to be privatised to avoid a crisis

Privatisation won't solve the problem at Telkom. Hiring capable people will solve the problem. Few of SOE's which are well run include, SARS, IDC, PetroSA, this means having capable people does really result in well run state companies. Not all is doom and gloom, selective analysis of SOE's is not right. Iscor was privatised and what has come of it in terms of contribution to the country? Nothing, the company (Arcellor Mittal as it is now known) is not making profits and not hiring as many apprentices as it did in the past (prior to privatisation). Norway as a country owns about half of all mineral and energy producing companies and it's not a failed state because once you have capable people running things, you are bound to succeed. Now the DA must tell us how will privatising Telkom help the country and most importantly in returning the company to its former glory i.e. making money for the state.

All of that will be achieved by privatization.

Telkom is making money for the state... the point is that it must not make money for the state... it must provide a service.

Telkom not only needs to be privatized, but it needs to be sliced into four competing companies from the top down with regulation preventing re-merging.

Thus four little baby Telkoms competing with one another all with their own bit of everything that Telkom has now... Everything fro consumer lines to high end satellite services etc. Top to bottom slices through all departments...

Telkom is a government (ANC) baby. The DoC cannot even make up their mind about what to do about it and it is getting pretty pathetic to watch them squabble over what to do with Telkom. One thing that is for sure, according to the following article (Click Here) is that government (ANC) just cannot make any good decision in favor of the South African consumer and citizen when it comes to generating income from these babies such as Telkom, Eskom, etc... The "masses" are simply not bothered enough to assist opposition parties in taking them to task, therefor next year and every year after, the very same situation just keeps on repeating itself without any solution whatsoever.

In a democratically elected government system the task of opposition political parties is to take the governing political party (in our case, the almighty ANC) to task on their failures and to highlight these to the "masses" so that the "masses" can make better informed decisions. Take this post for example, it states the obvious everyday news headlines, yet a select few of the "masses" would feel better by taking a defensive stance and further hamper the progress of this wonderful country.

Telkom doesn't need to be privatized they just need someone strong at the helm who is left to do what they need to do,under pinky its was really going places finally, slowly, but going there.Why oh why did they have to drive her out.

Privatization is definitely NOT the answer here telkom has far too big a strangle hold on the market.All that power in the hands of one company is asking for disaster...if we had strong opposition from neotel then maybe it could have been an option but as things stand now privatization will be ridiculous.

Would privatization be worse than the current DoC and ICASA, though? No matter how strong the Telkom leadership is, if the DoC undermines them, or forces them to do certain things, then they will fail.

Yeah like what exactly are we talking about here?

Pinky is technically and strategically strong but the right person to get telkom right needs to be a bit of a pusher as well,someone who can hold their own.A tough ask but non the less whats needed.

So far they've been running with their tails between their legs mainly because Lazarus Zim was too much of that type of person and was bullying everybody but with him gone theres plenty hope for the right person to be found and staying on to lead telkom successfully.
