Edit: That's just around Pretoria, Tshwane includes many others as well, it's from north of Midrand, all the way to the border of Gauteng with Limpopo province, it's a big metro. I think it includes Hammanskraal as well.

Indeed...On the worrying side, our infrastructural backlog is above R500 billion. However, this presents an opportunity to create jobs, skill people, invest in education and grow our economy.

Oh yes indeed you have a point there. I was trying to point out that if DA was speaking at Mamelodi or Atteridgeville, they would probably not be talking about potholes because many townships have backlogs in development of basic services.

The problem is that it is difficult to find the gems between the ocean of corruption, lies and deceit.
The real hard-working people are so far down the food-chain that their (few) successes are claimed as major victories by their seniors.
These are merely election promises that wil not be kept. Service in Cape Town is not as efficient as that. They concentrate on the main, busy routes, not the urban streets. Potholes eventually get filled, but only with a top layer. They don't actually get to the root of the problem and the same areas sink again once the rain comes.
Yeah, they tend to be below city management. Can't blame them sometimes for giving up and letting the current take them.

.. and yet they seem to get more done than the ANC. To me it's not about x amount of potholes being filled in x amount of hours, but a party that has a proven track record of not being so apathetic towards the public's issues as the ANC.

Yes. It is sad. As I've posted somewhere before, I've seen good people go bad over time, just buckling under the relentless onslaught of the system.

Its probably now a tourist attraction: See the worlds second largest man made hole on M1N JHB
BTW, I just drove 7hrs yesterday through the dodgy backroads of the Cape from Outdshoorn to Cape Town (450km) and did not see a single pothole the entire stretch. All I saw was lamp posts decorated like Christmas trees with DA election posters

Well, someone wrote in to the local paper complaining about potholes in our suburb. The council engineer said he couldn't find any. When I rang him directly with a polite offer to find them for him (with photo's), he put the phone down. They see what they want to see.

Before I moved to Pta in '97, I always saw this warning signs on our Cape roads about Potholes! I seriously thought that a pothole was an indentation in the road, as thats all I ever saw at these signs. I never once saw a hole in the road.
Fast forward to 2000 and I thought I saw potholes after moving to Pta, I'm driving past Kriel on one of its roads and my bakkie hits a pothole, by the time the the trailer entered the pothole the front tyres of the bakkie where still in the pothole - now that is what you call a pothole.
Fast forward to 2011, now back in the Cape since 2001, the biggest pothole I can point out in my local area is 50 cm wide and its actually the result of some emergency work they had to do one night to fix a water pipe.
