DA makes Tshwane pothole promise
2011-04-05 22:15

Pretoria - A Democratic Alliance-led council in Tshwane would fix potholes within 48 hours - this was one of ten promises made by the party on Tuesday when it launched its election campaign in Pretoria.

Speaking at the Pretoria City Hall, the DA mayoral candidate Brandon Topham said: "Potholes will be fixed within 48 hours and faulty street and traffic lights within 24 hours."

He said that in the 2006 local government election there was a mere 7% difference in support between the ruling ANC and opposition parties.

Urging Tshwane voters to support the Democratic Alliance, he said that a DA-led Metro would reduce crime, improve customer service in the municipality, get the city's finance in order, provide rebates to the poor and improve infrastructure.

He also said that Council meetings would be open to the public as would meetings where tenders were adjudicated.

If elected, DA councillors would sign a charter committing them to do their jobs.

"If we don't do our jobs, If I don't do my job, we will be booted."

He cited Cape Town and Midvaal as examples of good governance.

"Pretoria is our capital and it must be an example for our country," he said.

viva DA viva .... :)

Excellent - the ANC have been farting around for years and the pot holes just get worse. If the DA can get this done in 48 hours (Hell even a week would be great) then VIVA DA!!!!

Shew, I wonder if this is really "that time" . That time when the DA actually starts getting decent municipalities outside of the WC to run.

This could be a turning point.

Then again, it just as easily couldn't be.

I like this idea. Imagine if the ANC did this - there would be no one left in the party!!!

This only appeals to those living in the leafy 'burbs.

All this ongoing maintenance only creates jobs, good for the economy, and good for the people.. Pitty the ANC are too dense to see it that way

The only problem is that the majority of the people live in townships, etc. They don't even have tar roads there. So this is not going to change the vote. Unfortunately.

Are you sure? I am not disputing, just checking. Those roads may have been tarred in the meantime.

I like the promise the DA made, but not sure if that is enough to make people vote for them. Did they not have a list - or manifesto - with something like 10 promises? Or am I dreaming ?

"Potholes will be fixed within 48 hours and faulty street and traffic lights within 24 hours."

I live in a busy road in Somerset West. The average turnaround time for a pothole is 24hrs after the rain has stopped (sometimes it can rain for 10days solid in the Cape). The longest has been 72hrs. My street is busy but not a main road. The main roads I commute to work have a turnaround of 12hrs or less.

Its a hard life living under the DA cloud.

Awesome! Well done DA!

Now, having said that, while DA does come to the party and get stuff done, idiotic, uneducated (insert any race here - because that's the reality) people will still go and vote for the ANC during elections because it's all they know or because "DA is white and I won't vote for them" (even if they damn well do all the good they can)

Its ironic that the best run municipality in the country (Graff Reneitt), is ANC governed for the last 16yrs. They (the ANC) have a benchmark to work against that they created, but instead they use corruption and greed as their goals.

No one is saying the whole ANC is incompetent and corrupt. In fact is know personally of an ANC controlled metro that is doing well because of one hard working individual.

I have no problem with this and would support any party that can get the job done!

Unfortunately with the ANC it seems the bigger the pile of money, the more temptation there seems to be for self-enrichment.

Judging by the sheer number of potholes in Durban ( I'm assuming that Pretoria is just as bad if not worse) , I'm sure that would be a hard promise to keep. Maybe once they've caught up with the backlog but not straightaway.

i think the 48 hours applies to when it gets reported, and not that ALL potholes will be fixed within 48 hours of them "being in charge"

Even then, there must be a backlog. I applaud the idea but would be concerned that they are over promising.

And if they are, then they must face the consequences in subsequent elections and by-elections, just like any other political party that over promises *cough 1 million jobs*

True but the DA in this instance is targeting Tshwane Metro where the critical problems differ to those that affect people living in townships.
