DA MP lying about citizenship

14-06-28 23:12

Johannesburg - DA MP Phumzile van Damme is lying about being a South African citizen, the Sunday Times said.

The newspaper revealed that Van Damme was born in Manzini, Swaziland, in 1983, that her mother, Lynette van Damme, was born in Hlathikhulu village, also in Swaziland and that Van Damme's biological father, Elroy Mayisela, was a Swazi national.

If Van Damme is found to have misrepresented her citizenship, it would disqualify her from being a South African MP, the paper said.

Van Damme reportedly told the paper she was not sure why her citizenship was being questioned.

"Maybe it is because most of my family still live in Swaziland. Maybe it is because I hold a strange surname from the only father I know..." she was quoted as saying.

She reportedly told the Sunday Times that she was born in Nelspruit but grew up in Swaziland.

When asked where in Nelspruit, she reportedly said: "I am not sure, hey. I think in White River."

She said her mother told her she was born "at a hospital in Nelspruit" and that she had been "part of the struggle".

"I was involved in the ANC and some of the things around children's birth are very complex, as you would know as an African," Lynette van Damme was quoted as saying.

She told the reporter that the nature of her daughter's birth was "very secret".

When asked if Mayisela was Van Damme's biological father, Lynette reportedly said "yes and no", the paper reported.

Maybe her mother is lying and she is innocent? After all, we do rely on our parents for this info.
Are political parties not meant to screen their candidates? Surely if there was a whiff of a problem they should have cleared it up before appointing her?

Presumably she was asked to prove eligibility by presenting her SA identity book or SA passport? I don't think the party erred in any way in this case ... unless it turns out they never asked her for documentation.

How much more screening do you need to do when someone claims to be a citizen, and backs it up with an SA identity book and SA passport?
Yeah, tight spot.

<tinfoil hat> wonder what she has done to piss somebody off enough to dig that deeply into her past?

Surely one would need a valid Id number to be registered as an mp though?

Applying for an Identity book / Identity document for the first time

First time applicants must submit the following documentation to their nearest Department of Home Affairs office or South African mission or consulate abroad:

- Form BI-9, completed in black ink
- A certified copy of your Birth certificate or reference book or a copy of the old Transkei, Bophutatswana, Venda or Ciskei homelands identity or travel documents
- Two identical, colour photographs

Your fingerprints will be taken by a Home Affairs official and imprinted on Form DHA-9.

If you are a naturalised citizen or a permanent residence permit holder you must attach the following to your application form:

- your naturalisation certificate and a copy, which will be certified by Home Affairs
- your permanent residency certificate and a copy, which will be certified by Home Affairs
- your exemption certificate and a copy, which will be certified by Home Affairs
- Form BI-1620, which must be completed at a Home Affairs office

If the permanent residence permit or exemption certificate cannot be furnished, Form BI-829 must be completed for the issuing of a duplicate thereof. If the naturalization certificate cannot be furnished, you must apply for a duplicate prior to submitting the ID book application.

if you have no birth certificate?
She might jot have known and somebody had had to know her very well to leak this information. Maybe a school friend?

Do you have to be a citizen to be a MP.

Then an affidavit from both parents will do. I've been through this process some years back when an employee asked for help to get his 14 year old son registered.

I had to do something similar when I needed to apply for my ID book as it would appear that my (late) dad was a tad remiss in his duties after my birth! :D

Now I remember a news article about heads of communities that wrote letters for people to apply footprint fake id's in Limpopo.

So mommy could just have made fake statements and bob's your uncle.

Personally I'm not a fan of these State registrations. People don't realize how recent these things are. Our entire culture developed and grew up without the State being involved in registering births, marriages, deaths, etc. This only became relevant in the Age of the Nanny State. Until quite well into the 20th C the franchise was restricted to males, and in many places to male property owners.

with a surname like this it could get hilarious.

Welcome to the Jungle, Replicant, here you will Swelter In Hell and learn to keep your Enemies Closer if you ever want to be the Last Action Hero.

In these Assassination Games there will be No Retreat, No Surrender even if you are a Hard Target as there is Nowhere to Run if your Death Warrant is signed, this is Bloodsport - Until Death.

So will the Black Eagle Cyborg Street Fighter, an ex-Legionnaire with Dragon Eyes and a Lionheart, Double Team with GodZilla to pass The Exam and become a member of The Hard Corps? Or will they withhold their Full Love and Knock Off the Timecop to restore The Order?

Or will GodZilla go Narco and demand her Pound of Flesh and, in a Double Impact with her Second In Command (the Kickboxer), be Breakin' off your membership to avoid Maximum Risk by dodging Six Bullets in a Sudden Death showdown in the Parliamentory Inferno?

The Quest of the Sunday Times could lead to a Wake of Death for the Universal Soldier, destined to become of The Expendables.

Sorry to have Derailed the thread, it was too good an opportunity to miss.
