JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance led by Helen Zille is on course to win the Western Cape in the 2009 elections. This is according to the results of an opinion poll released by Ipsos-Markinor on Monday.

The poll was conducted in October 2008 shortly before the formal launch of the Congress of the People (COPE.) It found that DA support in the Western Cape stood at 42,8%. The ANC meanwhile received the support of 26% of those polled. 15,2% of respondents said they were undecided as to whom they would support.

Not exactly news but I predicted this last year already when asked by colleague. You can trace the decline of the ANC to a controversial provincial conference in 2005 in which Ebrahim Rasool was removed as leader of the party in the province.

The ANC in the Western Cape is deeply, there's even possibility that most of it's caucus in the Cape Town city council might walk over to COPE.

ANC losing the province next year will come as no surprise, least not to those in Luthuli House who seems to have written off any possibility of challenging the DA.

Most likely next year is that the DA gets into some sort of alliance with the ID/COPE...totally shutting out the ANC. Hopefully no-one will have to play the race card to get people to the polls.

The people's eyes are being opened by the fact that the DA is competant and it will only expand from province to province. Now with cope in the mix, I forsee very hard times for the ANC
