Cape Town - The SA Police Service (Saps) is set to return to "apartheid-era ranks" on April 1, Democratic Alliance MP Dianne Kohler-Barnard said on Thursday.

"The Democratic Alliance (DA) has learnt that the South African Police Service's return to apartheid-era ranks will be gazetted on 1 April, an exercise that the DA considers entirely reprehensible and completely unconnected from attempts to address South Africa crime rate," Kohler-Barnard said.

"Efforts at militarising the police ranks are attention-diverters.

"Instead of dealing with the real problems at hand, the Saps is now bothering itself with rank changes."

Kohler-Barnard said the police should "be doing the hard yards" by building new forensic science laboratories to get rid of the 23 000 sample backlog, overhauling the police's chronically "substandard" officer training regime and affecting real change in police ranks.

"Wasting our time on rank and title changes is unfathomable, she said.

Great financial cost

Kohler-Barnard said the new changes were almost identical to apartheid-era South African Police (SAP) ranks.

She said the national commissioner would now become a general, the deputy national commissioner will be known as lieutenant-general, assistant commissioners will be major-generals and directors would be brigadiers.

Senior superintendents would be lieutenant-colonels, captains would be majors and inspectors would be captains. A sergeant would reportedly be a lieutenant.

"Not only do these changes come at great financial cost, it is also highly problematic that the new rank structures and militarisation of the police is reminiscent of the Apartheid-era SAP - effectively a return to apartheid policing structures.

"This, together with increasing accounts of police brutality and a rise in civilian deaths at the hands of police, leaves us with little reason to believe that crimes perpetrated by criminals will go down and every reason to believe that crimes perpetrated by police officers will go up."

Nooit!! What is new? ANC loads of promises and no action.

The reason why I didn't continue studies in forensic molecular biology/genetics is because there's only one lab (Silverton?) with a few folks in it...not easy to get in there whatsoever.

They took an empty hospital( again fail ) in arcadia and has pretty offices there now. But according to Police people I know in pta its also just a pretty building no qualified people or equipment.

It has something to do with protecting the chain of evidence.

Yup. You have to work for the police (so crappy pay) to allow the evidence to be used in a court of law. One lab for the whole country...whoopdidoo.

One time, these punks broke into my sisters house. It took 12 days for the cops to send someone to collect evidence. And then the Dumb-ass had the cheek to complain that we had contaminated the area. The punks had broken in through the kitchen so what did he expect, for everyone not to eat for 12 days. And my sisters daughter was about 9 at the time and loved to bake so you can imagine.

The SAPS really do need a overhaul not rank name changes. But the ANC are stupid enough to think name changes are productive. Like changing a city or street name can somehow make apartheid disappear. Twits.

So typical of so many things - their incompetance is your fault.

Yip. My brother-in-law told the oke to get stuffed though.:D The cop just stood there with a blank expression on his face for a minute then quietly started to do his work, but of course he found nothing.

The DA should know best about the apartheid ranks, after all most of them did support aparthied.

This thread is not about spreading ANC propaganda, it's about the dumb-ass idea that the ANC has come up with. That changing rank structuring is in anyway going to help bring crime rates down. I don't much care for the DA anymore then the ANC but they are a lot brighter then the twit that calls himself Minister of Police. I take it as a ANC supporter, you find the idea a good one. Please show us how this idiotic plan is going to stop crime though, as people with more mental ability are baffled.

Full circle.....some things "apartheid" actually worked it seems....

the apartheid police used to have specialised units that delt with crime more effectively, the ANC realise that the white man didn't have these institutions in place and that they actually did do their job!!! as intended.
