My neighbors son who has just turned 18 bought a 1997 Daewoo Cielo dirt cheap. The car doesn't look to bad. He has asked for a bit of help from me as his dad cannot even change a light bulb. The ignition lock barrel unit that fits onto the steering column is broken and the barrel itself is gone.

This car was based on the Opel Monza so would anyone know if the ignition units would be the same. Lopec seem unsure. I have phoned Parts Mall and another Korean spares place and they don't stock the part.

I have seen some that has the same engine as my Corsa, only in 1.5l guise, it is basically an Opel. I am not too sure how key barrels work, is it just a mechanical thing that fits multiple keys and the ignition is controlled by the transponder circuit?

considering ive seen people who have those cars struggling to find thermostats,
and simply wiring the engine fans directly to power to get home.

dont believe you'll find one locally, might get lucky overseas.

Why would they struggle to find thermostats if the whole engine is an Opel engine? Daewoo, Chev, Opel, one and the same engine, it's either the SOHC or the DOHC.

Here's the 1.5l Daewoo, same one you find in the Chev Aveo, it's in 1.4l and 1.6l capacity in the Corsa. There's the Opel thermostat, maybe they just don't know what to look for.

maybe the parts will be similar, but you wont find it marked as Daewoo,
simply because it doesn't exist anymore.

Chevy's will slowly become like this as well, especially when it gets harder to track down parts specific to Chevy.

might find it marked as Opel, or GM, but thats why these cars depreciate a lot.

Only useless spare shops will have a problem because the parts book which they refer to will tell them exactly which models use the parts, it's usually a couple of models. One part can fit a Volvo, Mazda and Ford.

The online sites also lists the various models that uses the same part so unless you are illiterate or lazy, you won't struggle that much, problem is people don't appreciate that owning a car comes with responsibility of doing your homework, more especially on old cars.

Engine is identical so an Opel thermostat would work.

So the steering column on a Cielo is different to the Monza/Kadett so takes a different ignition unit. Found one at Korean Motor Spares in Kempton Park for R1398 ex vat.
