Hi everyone,

I've been a MyBB reader for sometime and I have found this health section useful, so I've decided to go ahead and ask for some advice regarding dark rings/dark circles under eyes?

This is something I've been struggling with and I've become very self conscious about it.

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice that could help?

You have sleep apnea.

I know I have it too.

To make a long story short I have slight (or not-so-slight) bags below my eyes because of years of sleep deprivation.

I do sleep with a mouth piece that juts my lower jaw forwards (to make room at the back of my throat to breathe) but it only works to some extent (though it is better than sleeping without it).

I am cueing and campaigning at the moment to go forward with treatment to have orthodoncy and major mandible surgery done to correct this problem ... and I'm going to buy a CPAP (Automatic) machine within the next couple of days to facilitate restful sleep during the orthodoncy period before the surgery.

Sigh ... I could write a book on the subject.

Thank you for your input,

@ zizo911 - that is definitely something I'm open to trying, I will do some research on what's available and if anyone can recommend a cream please do.

@ Picard - I haven't considered or researched sleep apnea, but I will look into it now. That sounds like a complicated process - it's good to see that you are taking action, I wish you all the best

My treatment and surgery could cost in excess of R200 000 .... that's if things go WELL!!!

My medical plan is in for a shock ... or most likely I will be in for as shock.

Medical plans these days have a habit of taking your money but giving little back.

That's serious cash! For interest sake, do you know if medical aid would assist with that?

I can agree with that, have you ever tried any remedies to deal with the bags/dark circles? Such as creams, cucumber, tea bags etc?

I've been typing 2 pages of a response ... but then I decided to delete it.

The answer is no. Medical aids don't like to involve themselves in procedures regarding orthodoncy, or anything related ... because it's not life threatening over the short-term.

Over the medium term, sleep-apnea has been directly linked with heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes and other health problems.

I'm currently in between a rock and a hard place.

^ That. My son had terrible black rings under his eyes. Put him on iron supplements, within 2 weeks they were gone.

He looked like uncle fester before the supplements.

I have gone through similar problems to you Picard, diagnosed with Apnea and first went with the mouth guard and eventually got a CPAP. Didn't fix the problem though and I believe I was misdiagnosed even after doing all the sleep laps and studies. Finally went to see an Endocrinologist and I have a pretty bad vitamin D deficiency. Busy treating it but it takes about a year to get back to normal but so far its been amazing. Some days I wake up and feel like a completely different person but then there are still a lot of bad days where I am exhausted.

Its not expensive to get your vitamin D levels tested and the symptoms are almost exactly the same as sleep deprivation. Might be worth looking into before you spend a lot of money.

hmmm .... OP how old are you and are you anemic ?

The pharmacist-wannabe-doc strikes again!

Anaemia has nothing to do with peri orbital pigmentation!!
Don't confuse the peeps please

and you just assume its hyperpigmentation. Tell me how you came to that conclusion? acute cyanosis can mimic it so can sleep apnea, lack of oxygen so yes anemia can cause it.

You gonna tell the OP to use hydroquinone next lol

How did you guys get diagnosed with sleep-apnea? Where can one do a test?

You tell them what the medical codes are, by which drs and how much every code given will be paid for (you record this). Do your research to find out who the specialists are as well as any anaesthetist. And any possible dr that will be incolved. Then you ask for them to send it in writing. If they are able to sufficiently help you during the process of phoning of medical aid and you have no other question then just get a referance for the call and note who and when uou spoke to. This will tell you how it is covered and if done wright gives you a leg to stand on when it cones to the paynent of your bills. Advice useless if money is not a big deal to you

Phone your local private hospital. They can give you the contact details of a sleep clinic. The tests are usually done over-night in a hospital. You book in at 18:00 and check out at 6 the next morning.

It you get drowsy easily while driving and or feel very tired and sleepy during the day, you probably din't get proper rest.

If you don't have anyone to monitor you while you are sleeping, use your cellphone's voice record function (if it has one) to record your breathing while you are sleeping.

NO ANAEMIA DOES NOT CAUSE DARK CIRCLES

Please don't google and post k@k here.

Also all those other serious conditions you mention will present with other more distinctive symptoms and signs.

Of course sleep deprivation in any form will make the eyes "appear" darker due to congestion so will simple conditions like sinusitis.
Most times these are transient and fluctuate on a day to day basis.

Persistent dark circles IS hyperpigmentation.

Hey to the OP.
I have lately had the same, the reason is the following:
Allergies, climate, food eaten.
Go see a specialist.
I have these amazing drops for the nose, I will get the name and post.
It is linked to food, allergies.
