Dashboard Cameras

Thread revival..

i['m in the market for 2 dash cams.. one nice one and one cheaper one.

has anyone had experience with Africa Longhorn?

i'm thinking about This but i can try my luck getting it cheaper bidding on This.

For the second Cam i was thinking about This, i see them going cheaper on bidorbuy but i'm not sure if those are knockoffs.

what do you think?

Tried three different dashcams, none of them proved reliable.

Mini806, Garmin 10, and some noname brand - all useless.

In what manner were they unreliable?

They freeze up or go weird when they get hot, typically when the sun shines on them. Happens even while driving.

Missed some kids stoning our cars while driving in Zim, would have been useful for the authorities, because the Mini806 had gone crazy.

I now use two Mini806's, swap them out when one goes nuts.

I had the same issue with my 0803 , the problem is the direct sunlight. I've used black duct tape to cover the spot directly above the camera this has stopped the malfunctions. I'll try to get some silver reflective tape to neaten it up when I get a chance.

heat + battery would be the cause of that.

The really pricey cameras makes use of a capacitor instead of battery and won't have any issues with heat.

I bought mine from Takealot but don't think they sell it anymore.

Quite a nice unit!
The only problem I have with it is that when you leave it in your car, it just vanishes and somehow breaks your window glass. :erm:

I've heard of that problem, apparently the fix is moving out of the country. Since the government is blocking the patch upgrade from being released in SA.

The EagleEye is sold on the 4x4community forum shop.

As to the thing fleeing after breaking your window, if I park in public for long I often take it with me, not that it is very visible (I have an HP one).

Ok, so I'm too lazy to read. What is the best value for money dash cam out currently? Is Garmin dash cams worth their price?

so far i have found the cheapest cam i'd buy is THIS since the HD quality is very good, cheaper cams record at 1080 but with very crappy quality.

i do like the Eagleye mentioned above cheapest i've found is HERE at R1.6k it has gps and great video quality with a 140 degree lens which i find the perfect width.

i like the dual cams with front and rear in the same cam found HERE but no gps.

so i'm still on the fence.

Wow, if only it had side cams too... a biker didn't stop at a mini circle and nearly t-boned me on driver side when I took my turn, my video doesn't show him but shows that I'm in the right and it was my turn to go, would have been better if it saw him too.

i don't know why the dashcam world is so slow to evolve, it can't be that difficult to develop a system with true 360 degree vision. heck it should be an extra factory built into cars by now.
