I installed the YI smart camera into my car last week. So far in pretty impressed. I don't buy from tajealot but it was 899 compared to 780 on AliExpress.

My dashcam saved another lady from being a victim. She stopped in front of me at a 4-way stop, then moved on. A fellow in a bakkie did not stop and hit her passenger door. He leapt out and started kicking her car. She had hit her head on the window and was concussed. As I went to help her, he reversed out the way and drove off. I had to wait about 15 mins for the ER Ambulance.

I called my phone using hers in her handbag when she was in the ambulance, as by now she had woken up, to get her name and number. Someone coming the other way phoned the SAPS

The dashcam clearly showed everything, including the CF registration of this bakkie, and the driver

Her insurance (Alexander Forbes) were emailed the footage and said they would sort it out. In the 45 mins I was there, no cops appeared. The Kirstenhof SAPS is less than 1km away. I never heard from them at all.
 
Dammit CF drivers are worse than CY drivers.

I'm CF rider.

I gave up on the dash cam for the bike and mounted it in the car rather. Kept misbehaving, but in the car it's easier to manage.

I need a better motorcycle cam.

Very impressed. Eventually got the fuse taps as well so the install is so clean.

I recently bought the Garmin Dash Cam 55. I also bought a hard wiring kit from Geewiz for about R450 which included 3 different size fuse taps to hard wire it into the fuse box. I managed to install it all myself. The fuse tap made it really easy to hard wire the cam into an ignition circuit that so the camera automatically switches on and off with the ignition. I never have to think about it, it just automatically switches on when I start the car, and switches off when I turn it off.

It's voice activated so whenever I see an idiot doing idiot things in front of me I just say "Ok Garmin, Save Video" and it saves the video without me having to touch the device. I also keep it permanently in the car, so far no one has tried to break into the car to steal it. It's so small though it doesn't attract much attention when you just casually walk past the car.

With dashcams you definitely get what you pay for. I think it's well worth paying a few grand for a decent dashcam instead of a few hundred rand for a cheapie.

I also got the Parking Mode cable from Garmin SA in Dec 2017, when I purchased my Garmin DC45 - it is hard-wired into the Accessory circuit of my car so that as soon as I turn off the ignition, it goes into 'Parking Standby Mode' and will record & save footage if there is sudden movement or an impact to your vehicle whilst it is parked.

It also has battery protection circuitry so that if your vehicle is left unattended for an extended period of time with the camera attached, it will not drain the battery flat.
