Apologies for asking this here, but I get different answers at the various Vodashops :-; I'm sure Vodacom3g will happily sort out the confusion!

Can one get data access on a Vodago package? If so, what are the rates?

Ditto for Family TopUp.

Thanks

PS: I had an MTN subscriber asking me if he could use a Vodago package to access his mail via GPRS. He spent more than R1000 during December on MTN-GPRS.

You can get GPRS data access on pre-paid options such as Vodago. You need to call Customer Care and have it provisioned on your number. Family Topup 'might' be different. Give me a few minutes to confirm.

Currently, you'll pay GPRS out-of-bundle rates for data access on pre-paid. That is today R10/Mb and from 1 February R2/Mb.

Pre-paid data bundles are being investigated.

Taking the SMTP issues discussed before into account, the MTN subscriber can use a Vodago package to access his mail via GPRS.

Quite off topic, but...

A while ago I signed a 24 month Fam TopUp contract, and got a prepaid account for another family member. I had intended to use Vodacom's Airtime transfer service to transfer some of the R135 from the FamTopUp contract to the prepaid account. It had advitised that the R135 airtime could be "used as you like".

However, after waiting 3 months (apparently the Airtime transfer service can only be activated on contracts after 3 months of payment) I phoned customer care and found that I wasn't able to transfer any of the R135 on the family topup contract, but only additional airtime that I purchase for the contract.

Your comments on this vodacom3g (if you wouldn't mind, I know its OT!)

Thanks, Nick

Nickste, let me investigate and get back to you.

It is possible to get GPRS data access (for internet access & sending mms's), on the "Top Up" packages - u have to call yr Service provider & request for it to be activated if you don't already have it (i use it regularly). It is charged at Vodacom's "MyMeg0" rates (currently R10/MB). And u can definitely use the subscription amount to pay for the usage as well as from any monies u have accumulated from additional recharges.

ppl, if it isnt working for you, then dial *111# on any of vodacoms packages, then it will give u a menu asking what phone you have and what settings u want, send them to yourself and in doing this it should also activate you for GPRS! you need at least R2.50 to acces GPRS on vodago

You could transfer of the R135 be 4 i was told by agent but this was stopped cause some of the customers were defrauding the company.

Would be excellent if the R135 inclusive call value for FamTopUp could be used for data as well!

u on the button u could use the 135 to make calls and if u want can be soley used for data..

How!?

Hey SWF007,

I was also told that the service was 'being abused...' How can it be abused though? I pay my monthly contract, if I want to transfer my money to another account, I should be able to.

Again, I ask if vodacom3g has any comments?

Chow, Nick

Nickste, I DID promise to get back to you. I've been trying to get all the complexities around this abuse cleared up so I could give you a proper answer. Should have kept you informed on any progress.

I'll answer in more detail on Thursday but it's amazing how people find loopholes to abuse the system.

generally people do this because they are being overcharged for a service that can be 50% less or cheaper. Hence you can download music, movies, games etc online because the pimp daddies havent learnt that dropping prices curbs this kind of commercial abuse.

On the 1st of Feb. Vodacom updated their site to reflect the new packages. It stated in the terms and conditions that all of the bundles except 3G were available for contract and prepaid. Today the site has changed, NOW only contract subscribers can get the bundles. Prepaid customers can only get the R2/MByte deal. What changed between Tuesday and today? This is unprofessional, Vodacom...

ajax,

This was a slipup on Vodacom's side. Annoucing pre-paid bundles was a bit premature.

As been posted here all along, the new bundles will be on contract only and pre-paid users will pay the out-of-bundle rates. However, pre-paid bundles are being developed and will be available in the near future.

In the mean-time, some customers 'constructed' their own low cost data solutions by getting a low cost contract, such as the Messenger package @ R35/month, and bolting a data bundle on top of this.

In addition to the data, you also get extremely low priced SMS (0.225c/SMS) plus a smaller data bundle.

This obviously is not pre-paid (as already stated pre-paid bundles are on the way) but does show you can get a cost effective solution without having to pay the 1G pricing.

hi ppl,

i am on vodacom family top-up. does anybody know if using my cell to access the internet via gprs is deduced from my phone credit, or if i will receive a monthly bill from vodacom in the post? if it is deducted from my phone credit, will my gprs access just be terminated when i run out of credit?

thanks

Just reading some past posts from this thread.....next week Vodacom have been investigating Pre-Paid bundles for ONE YEAR......come on vodacom does it really take one year to launch something, you guys rolled out a whole 3G network in a few months, but you cant give your loyal customers something they are all screaming for?.....

This has pretty much been answered already, but speaking from experience:

Yes, you can access the net using gprs on the family top-up plan. It needs to be activated by your service provider, but that should be free. You pay out of bundle rates, i.e. R2 per meg (where is this R10 per meg figure coming from?!) and you cannot buy a data bundle. Whatever you spend on gprs does come off your R135 per month.

For gprs, the family topup contract acts as prepaid - as usual, it's a "worst of both worlds" type situation.

(BTW, and totally off-topic: why doesn't the search function on vodacom.co.za work? A search for 'gprs' returns no results :S)

Just did a 'gprs' search on vodacom.co.za and got a bunch of results back. Won't you re-test please?

Nope, still says "We could not find question or answer that matched your keyword entered above, please try again." This was via 'Help' and then entering 'gprs' (minus the quotes) in the 'Ask Bankole' search box.

Ok, thanks. I did the search in the search bar on the top right. That gave quite a few hits.

Will pass Bankole's lack of knowledge on for action / training.
