Okay i need to know something. Might be a weired question, but im keen to know.

Is there specific things an isp does to an uncapped account from a data perspective?

Im on a 20mbps line, but apart from FUP im guessing, what or how would things be affected if i took a 10mbps uncapped data on a 20mbps line?

I know might be a stupid question, but im keen to understand what an isp might do with the data apart from the FUP which might differ between the packages.

If its a dumb question, just tell me, i can handle it. Ill cry a little, but ill eventually move on. :D

I think each ISP handles it diffrentley, but financially they assign a amount of bandwidth to a account, before its throttled, shaped etc.

So if you put a 10mb account on a 20mb line, you get slower internet connection, and the amount they provision for said account would be less than the 20mb account, so you would gain on monthly fee only.

It works out cheaper to have a 20mbps line bundled with 10mbps account at Afrihost, vs having a 10mbps line and 10mbps account. Also with 10mbps lines you would normally see 8.5 to 9mbps. With a 20mbps line I get 11mbps down.

Yeh im trying to figure this out. Its just basically the issues with having data at less than the line speed.. Basically, does my line run worse off with a data account thats less than the line im on. If that makes sense

I am 20mbps ADSL, not VDSL.
20mbps ADSL with 10mbps account would give you about 11mbps down and 0.85mbps up.
20mbps VDSL with 10mbps account would give you about 11mbps down and 1.9mbps up.
If you have your line and data both bundled with Afrihost it will cost you a few rand less to have a 20mbps line. So it can't hurt.

The 20Mbps line should allow you to "burst" higher than normal, so expect to hit higher than 10Mbps at times while usually being throttled to 10Mbps over sustained downloads. If the line is faster you won't have to take ADSL overheads into account as well, so speedtests should always hit 10Mbps.

What's your usage, are you sure a capped account isn't a better idea?

hey pal, capped is okay. I switched to a 400GB package ie 200GB + 200GB with afriplus. But we are 4 people that stream most of the day, okay not me so much, but the missus and the 2 kids.

I normally schedule my downloads between 11:30pm and 7am, so thats the not a problem. But streaming usage is high, along with browsing, facebook, twitter etc.

So now im wondering if i shouldnt downgrade my line to a 10mbps line, as im hardly hitting 8mbps on a 20mbps line. So paying for 20 and only getting less than 10 which is crazy. My only concern is will they shape or throttle me if i hit more than 400 gigs but purely on streaming.

The advantage for me as a capped user will be the midnight downloads etc. If i now do those downloads on an uncapped account, they going to shape or throttle me like crazy.

so maybe i should downgrade to a 10mbps line

What is your line actually syncing at and what is your line capable of syncing at?

FUP from Afrihost:

Home Uncapped packages are subject to throttling should a user have reached their monthly threshold and our network is under strain. Premium Uncapped packages are not subject to throttling or monthly thresholds, and will enjoy full speed real-time services under all normal circumstances, but may be subject to shaping of downloads should the network be under strain. Business Uncapped packages are not subject to throttling, shaping or monthly thresholds - but do however come with a user controllable feature via ClientZone to prioritise non-p2p traffic on their account to ensure business-critical services always get the highest priority.

Monthly Thresholds(for home uncapped)

1 Mbps: 20GB
2 Mbps: 40GB
4 Mbps: 80GB
8 Mbps: 100GB
10 Mbps: 120GB
20 Mbps: 200GB
40 Mbps: 400GB

If you're on premium or business switching linespeeds won't affect shaping. Premium will only ever shape "downloads"(read: torrents), business shapes nothing.

If you want no shaping the sums are simple:

1. Work out the max your line is capable of achieving, get that speed
2. Work out your monthly usage, if the capped account(with Plus+) is cheaper than Premium uncapped get capped, if not get Premium uncapped and schedule downloads for off peak.

OR

If you don't want to deal with any shaping get business uncapped.

My line is currently syncing at 20mbps. My actual speeds are below 10mbps. On a good day its around 16mbps.

Post line stats, you shouldn't be getting 10-16mbps speedtests if your line is syncing at 20 and you're on a 20meg account

Does your line drop at random intervals or are at specific times?, have you tried to run a line monitoring app?. let this app run on your computer for a few days to monitor your router & line...your upstream SNR could cause issues if there's just a slight drop, ASSIA will take over

I havent had a disconnect so to say, but last few nights youtube has been buffering, which never happened in a long long time. I tried my Crystal web and Axxess test accounts and the same thing. The speeds are up and down as well. I ran about 10 different speed tests after each other, and it was not consistent once. Each time gave me something different.

Try that app m8, this could be your SNR Fluctuating, causing issues. Happened to me as well.

Your line is easily capable of 20meg so keep it. Using that app suggested if your SNR swings wildly then you have a line issue, if your pings shoot up it's likely a congestion issue.

its definately not congestion, or at least that what Charl indicated. He said our exhange was only at 50% capacity, but there was a transmission link missing which needed to be sorted out by Telkom tecchie. But the problem is more around should i or shouldnt i drop down to 10 considering that in recent weeks ive been struggling to get a speed test over 10mbps. Its been horribly below that.

I have asked if they can switch me over to Interleave from Fast, and see if Assia can do something. I dont game, so Assia shouldnt really bother me that much, unless my pings go out of the roof and my streams begin to suffer
