Aaarrrggghhh! The pink text! Make it stop!

Go for the E270 it can do 7.2Mbps down and 2.0Mbps up and it has a USB 2.0 interface so can be used on a desktop, laptop or even eee PC.

The E800 can also do 7.2Mbps down, but only 382kbps up and because it has an ExpressCard/34 interface it can only be used on a limit range of PCs.

I would also personally choose the E270 for the improved upload speed mentioned above.

The USB ExpressCard/34 format appears to be more versatile though. There are a number of different adapters that you can buy to allow the card to work in older laptops as well as off a normal USB port. If both cards had the same upload speed specifications (say the Huawei E270 and the equivalent ExpressCard Huawei E169G) then it might be a more difficult choice. Some people also prefer to use an internal device rather than an external device when travelling around.

@ginggs: Yes, you are of course correct! I was thinking about the E870 - the E169G is just a smaller USB model that is being used in Europe. Huawei really seems to be churning out new models ...

If you were comparing the E870 to the E270, it seems that the E870 also has some type of external antenna connector while the E270 does not which might also be a consideration.

@Trainne: To avoid any confusion Novatel also make an ExpressCard card called an XU870 which is equivalent to the Huawei E800 which does not support the higher uplink speed.
