I've had a data contract with Vodacom for around 3 years. Last year my ugrade came up and I just didn't go. As I have it, the contract then "expires" and turns into a month-to-month one. Somebody else told me that the contracts automatically renew after 2 years, whether you upgrade or not.

Does anybody know how this actually works?

No. Not true. If you upgrade date is 22/04/2010, then it will be still that date even if you dont upgrade for a year after that date is reached. Only once you request us to upgrade you, issue you with new equipment and send you on your way do we then extend the line again for 24 months. Extending the line for 2 years without you consenting to it would be wrong.

Thank you! Appreciate the answer :)

But if one does let the contract simply roll-over without doing anything one continues to pay the original monthly fee which includes payment for the hardware.

I have a data contract with Vodacom that reached its two year mark recently. I had the choice of renewing with an upgrade, renewing without upgrading or abandoning the contract and going pay-as-you-go. I opted to renew without upgrading and as a result my monthly account has dropped by R65.99 on a My Gig 1 contract. That represents a saving of over R1500 over the next 24 months.

I do believe you are referring to this:

NO DEVICE @ R55-00 DISCOUNT (R294-00 PM) FOR 24 MONTHS ON STD MY GIG 1 2010-03-07 2010-05-06

Yes, but you have to upgrade your line, meaning we extend your contract for another 24 months and then we load the new discounted tarrif onto your line.
