Data prices go haywire

I still say its crazy.. They can charge a service cost to provide the Internet service (like Telkom that charge u for the "upkeep" cost of ADSL line rental)

I know Telkom and IS are the only providers.. but they provide it to the public at around R60-R70 per gig (even with telkom's profits included already)

So Vodacom/MTN/Cell-C , can charge a "upkeep cost" and say R80-R100 per gig of data. I don't see where they get R289 for 1gig.

It isn't exactly correct to compare Vodacom's R289/1GB to the retail price of 1GB Shaped ADSL, bcos Vodacom does not shape its 1GB, rather compare unshaped prices.

Note: I do not condone Telkodemonopolies charging more for unshaped data transfer than it does for shaped data transfer. By definition, unshaped data transfer should always cost less than shaped data transfer, and shaped data transfer should only exist when a customer says 'please provide me with a custom solution where you give more priority to these types of packets xyz...'

R289 for 1gig. *one gig costing R65* <-- that is a profit of R220+-

the R65-R70 per gig i can understand (cause thats what it costs them from Telkom or IS) But u cannot tell me it costs them another R220+- to offer people this service. They can maybe say R50 service cost. or R80 max per month. and then charge u the R70 a gig, or even add a few bucks for profit on the R70.. making it R100 per gig. so then R250 should get u 2gigs including the service cost.

But if there are 6/7 people from the government on Telscum's board, I kinda get the feeling that they are somehow "owned" by the people of the country as our taxpayer money go towards putting those people on the board or at least we line their pockets. Should they not be acting in our interests? All this red tape is nauseating! :sick:

Has there ever been an undertaking by the Auditor General into Telscum to at least audit how they get to their pricing which is then resold to ISP's etc? And if such an undertaking has been done...Where are the results? Will they ever be made public?
Does the AG have the scope/mandate to investigate such a matter?

All about service and quality my anal cavity! And at the same time (if the AG does audit) they should come to a reasonable conclusion about line rental for ADSL!

Please tell me if I'm grasping at straws here....

As mentioned on this thread before I cannot understand their logic behind what 1Gig of data can do. It's a pity some people buy this cr@p!

Im tired of ranting and raving, tired of trying to show these people how big a f**k@ss they all are.

So all I can really say in the end is F**K YOU TELKOM, the lot of you!!!

What kind of country has national mobille broadband offerings competing head to head on cost per gig with fixed line anyway!?

VM is still the best option and value for people at the bottom of the market, which sadly is the vast majority of the population

While that might be true for a while longer, it is not the point I was making - my point was that VM backed the wrong horse by choosing the CellC network bcos CellC does not have broadband: EDGE != broadband.

I'm sure that VM must be painfully aware that consumers want broadband, and that CellC is not providing broadband.

Some ... I think you have an unrealistic view of the average usage pattern in the country currently. The 'heavy' users on these forums represent a very small minority of knowledgable users.

The average user out there, namely 500K dialups, 200K wired bb & 140K wireless bb still thinks the Internet consists of surf+email and most dont even get to anywhere near 1Gig usage.

In time this will change as awareness rises, but for now 1Gig products are the most prominent as they serve the requirements of the bulk of users ... sad but true.

Nope thats correct from what i know aswell. Page is filled with mistakes esp. with the MTN deal stating that if you sign with a 24month contract on the Extended Data 1GB you only get 1GB free for 3 months (complete bull). Get it for the full 24mnths. 3 Months is for people who add 1GB to their existing bundle.

1024 is correct so it should be 1048 but it depends on who's maths you use.

What you say is true. Although they measure 1gig based on for example 1 movie clip == 10meg therefore 1gig == 100 clips.

This is so misleading as there is still data being sent when I download deducting from the cap, plus they use a really low average in their calculations. Today even for most users I think 1gig is absolutely nothing. Browsing 1 page cost me 3meg. Also an e-mail for work purposes such as a powerpoint presentation can be huge!

Who's to forget that we are supposed to be getting triple play services, something that is definately not possible with current prices, not even close. 1gig of TV will be like watching for less than a day :/ especially if its HD.

On BBC click they mentioned how easy it is for a household user to rent a movie via their TV and it streams to the TV even in HD format. South Africans can only dare to dream! :(

Services like these could be commonplace if not for the idiots controlling everything!
 
Oh and there is definately 8 bits to 1 byte meaning a gig is 1024 bytes. Thats how computers work and thats how it stays, tell these idiots at i-burst and wherever else to get with the program.

Wrong:p
1 gigabyte = 1024 megabytes
1 megabyte = 1024 kilobytes
1 kilobyte = 1024 bytes
1 byte = 8bits

Therefore 1 Gigabyte = 1024 x 1024 x 1024 bytes = 1073741824 bytes:D
