Just a thought for you to roll around.
Once VM sort out their problems and have enough customers to back them will data still remain @ 50 C per Meg.
Why have we not seen the other SP also dropping their prices yet?
Do they know something we don’t?
Is VM also going to jump to the R2 a Meg?
Cell C is charging R2 a meg and VM is using their infrastructure, how can they be charging 50 c???
 
VM has a wholesale agreement with CellC, so they get it at close to cost.

VM does not make a lot of money from a few people, but a little money from many people... they have hardly any overheads as they don't need to run a network.

i think their prices will stay on 50c/Mb.

the other operators are not dropping their prices because they have faster speeds and can justify charging more. hopefull CellC will have a 3G network up soon so we can get better speeds at 50c/Mb... VoIP here we come!
 
You can theoretically use VoIP on the existing EDGE network. In fact, my phone is approved by Skype and came with Skype pre-installed, although it only has GPRS Class-10! :confused: Don't ask me how that is supposed to work, I haven't attempted to use it yet.
 
So if they get it at cost (50c), then just imagine how do the other cell companies smile on a profit of R1.50 per MB!!!

Just wish all good benifits will be in one operator.

The 3G of Vodacom
The rate per Mb of Virgin Mobile
The 50c woza weekend of Cell C
And no irretating meerkat from MTN:D

I think andres meant they get it at cost, but still make a profit, meaning they get it at something like 1c/MB, which is still, realistically, less than what it actually costs a network to provide a megabyte of data.

No degree of reliability will convince me to pay MTN rates. Just my humble opinion. ;)
 
Heh, well it wasn't only their reliability per se that eventually convinced me to return to them... it was more like the difference between their reliability and VM's unreliability... ;)

I'm not really talking about downtimes though, I don't mind occaisonal downtimes, I'm talking about disconnects (very annoying on IRC or IM) and slow data transfers.. :(

All that eventually convinced me to drop VM for data purposes (after several months of using them) in favour of a monthly 350 MB MTN data bundle... The last two months I've been on MTN I've had no downtimes and no disconnects, speed has almost never dropped below about 160 kbps and often sits steadily at around 220 kbps on downloads - this is on EDGE.

But at the end of the day we have to decide how much reliability and speed we need and how much more we're willing to pay for it.. ;)

Oh and MTN does at least have the second best prepaid data rates... seeing as neither Voda nor Cell-C even offer prepaid data bundles...
 
In my (very little) experience of using CellC, they're practically the same as Virgin Mobile when it's going good... (i.e. I never experienced any "slow down" with them) ;)

I pickup a good EDGE signal on CellC from where I am, and I did manage to get up to 220kbps on downloads... :)

Compared to MTN or Vodacom?
Assuming we are comparing CellC EDGE with MTN or Vodacom EDGE then I'd rate them as equal to MTN which is IMHO faster than Vodacom.. I've never had much success with EDGE on Vodacom.. I don't pick it up at home, but I have picked it up when travelling.

Of course if we compare CellC's EDGE to MTN or Vodacom's HSDPA... well then it's a lot slower..

That's all I can really say about them... bear in mind that I've got very little experience with them... :o

KEEP on DREAMING until 2008.CELL C will only be investing in 3G in 2008.By that time Vodacom and MTN will have 3G everywhere you go

Cell C and Virgin mobile got alot to learn from Vodacom and MTN.Remember Cell C and Virgin Mobile started business YESTERDAY.......This is the difference
 
Hey

I have been very frustrated with them the past few weeks. Slow speeds, disconnects and just general pathetic reliability. I heard rumours that they were upgrading and that this was causing problems. The past week has been like heaven. I have connected first time every time, the slowest speeds I got were 13 kilobytes per second at 20:45 at night (peak time in the suburbs). If they can keep this up it is going to be awesome.
 
I'm reasonably happy with VM data. It's not offline more often than my VLive! was with Vodacom and it's a quarter of the price... but maybe I'm just comparing one bad service with another, slightly worse one. Neither is good, but VM is better in my opinion.

What phone is that? Might work in a perfect world with zero congestion etc. but even then it'd be doubtful. What's Skype like on VM EDGE, anyone tried it? And what's the data transfer like?

If VM don't sort their network out in the next couple of months then they probably won't be getting it right for a while which means I'll be moving to MTN for data.

Well the network's the same as VM's isn't it? Or is the VM traffic routed differently?
