Complaints of the season to one and all.... ;)

I accidentally deleted the wrong folder (not to recycle bin but shift+del) and obviously its like a "permanent" delete off the hdd. Any recommendations of free recovery software that will help me retrieve these files?

Using Windows 7 and tried undelete, easy recovery, file scavenger and I find everything else but not the files that were in or this folder. Its on a seperate drive and not the same drive that has windows 7 on it. It wont be due to encryption that i dont see these files, will it?

I know...yes... it was dumb but it happened!

Many thanks for help

I assume you have little or no data recovery experience?

What I'll suggest is that you download and install getdataback for ntfs - *Downlad and install it to a drive that did not contain the files*

It's very easy to use, but to recover anything useful you'll need to licence it.

Whatever the case, I've allways found that to be the best recovery app I've ever seen.

If in doubt, take it to a specialist. If it's important enough to pay for, then it's safer to pay for it.

tsk...tsk.... when will ppl learn.... you know what they say about assumptions! but anway...back to the problem at hand...

thanks for suggestion, been there, tried that, didn't work. from what i have read, each time to you try to recover data, the app you use, rewrites the FS and it makes recovery a bit more tricky and each time you don't see the same data either.

thanks for the advice or is it a tip? and if u missed it, i did mention the word FREE?

I have Easy Recovery 6.2 Pro but it doesn't pick up the deleted folder or the files that were in it.

anyone else with suggestions?

Damn dude. You are asking us for help, so quit with the condescending attitude. bullzeye.za's assumption regarding recovery experience was reasonable given the info provided.

How about you tell us whether you are using encryption & what kind then maybe we can tell you whether it will interfere.;)

No any half-way reputable recovery software should not touch the drive being recovered.

Your best bet is getdataback as said above. Use the through mode...forgot what its called. If that doesn't work then the data has already been overwritten and recovery programs won't help. You can try taking it to a forensics specialist, but its unlikely that he will be able to recovery the whole thing. Maybe fragments.

most important thing is to not write any data to the disk. it could potentially overwrite your deleted files.

Right-click on the directory which contained your deleted one, select Properties and go to the Previous Versions tab page. It doesn't always have the previous version.

You can also try NTFS Undelete (open source and free).

Attempting to restore a previous version will write to the disk, so you could reduce the total number of files recovered by doing that.

If the nature of the data is such that you can recreate it - then I would suggest use your time profitably and start now instead of wasting time with all these "wonderful" pieces of software. I did the same a few months back and spend about a month trying to recover and eventually did manage to get some back. However the quality of the recovery was not good and problems with the recovered data caused me more hassles than I would have cared for. So I suggest although it might seem tedious and time consuming - if you can - then redo.

dont take it to a specialist! lol. I was quoted over 6k once to recover a 250GB hdd having being told thats the only way.

Next thing someone says, just unplug the controller board from another 250gb and put it on the broken one and try - and voila it worked 100%. this after ther "professionals" said its not possible, give us 6k.

Anyhoo, DONT copy anything onto that disk, since windows marked the space as available and may overwrite it.

then use bradl..i cant pronounce it's option of GetDataBack or get Hiren's boot disk and try one of the tools on there.

hahahaha

R1500? where were u when i phoned. I wont say the co name but they had a few billboards (light pole ones) dotted around the nothern suburbs of JHB.

Look, it was 65GB of photos I have taken since digicams came out, so i pretty much would prob have paid 6K anyway!

Thanks all for the suggestions and assistance.

In fact, HTC_Guy....I might just take you up on your Christmas offer, is it still on the table? Perhaps tell me what software it is that you use(via PM) and maybe I can do that....

Anomaly(??) - There was no attitude or sarcasm. My problem was quite clear. I've been working in IT for many years(Techie, SysAdmin, Cisco Engineer, etc.) and nearly kicked myself - maybe i should have - for do this...so...please do not tell me about attitude.

Again, thanks for all the assistance and help.

I tried Easy Recovery Pro(Full + Registered) again last night but I don't think its doing a deep scan to detect and/or recover the folders I'm looking for. Nothing it picks up looks vaguely familiar.

One more FAQ, will it pick up folders that have been moved off the drive?

- hope this posting was not sarcastic or condescending. apologies if i offended anyone...prolly just REALLY frustrated right now.

I agree with HTC_guy - I also recover for about R1500 - if you're not technical you can use Recuva BUT it will NOT recover with any folder structuring - it will recover all the files in one place and it would be up to you to sort them. So at the end of the day if you do not do this as daily work (like me) and own Get Data Back legally, you do need some assistance otherwise, you can spend the next months trying to sort your files into some sort of folder hierarchy with Recuva.

In your experiences what is the success rate for

- Easy Recovery
- Recuva
- GDT

Which software is top-rated?

I know i lost about 150GB of data but when i tried to recover with ER it only found about 50% of it....maybe i'm doing something wrong? What's worse is that is this my backup drive....go figure

...maybe....i should put down the mouse and step away from the keyboard.

it happens to all of us sooner or later. I got a new Dell laptop once, moved my docs from server to Laptop. Deleted them off server, then put my USB stick in to backup data from Laptop. And it gave error, so I rebooted laptop - that was the last time my hdd in the laptop worked. 1 Day old :)

thankfuly I had made backups before so was about 1 month out. But it happens. Maybe once this is sorted out, try an online backup service like i-drive or Carbonite. I've been using one of them for about 7 months now and its really worth every cent.
