When receiving Whatsapp calls or texts, does the receiver's data get used up, as well as the sender's data? I was always under the impression that only the sender's data is eaten up....and NOT the person who receives the text or call.

Yes. It uses data on both ends.

Yes you spend your mobile data when sending messages and media as well receiving.
