Hi All

My wifes data usage has suddenly skyrocketed over the last 3 months. Her browsing habits have not changed and we have Wifi at home. I have used DataMan for years to monitor both our usages in 3g and Wifi over the past 2 years during which we never came close to using our monthly limit of 500mb 3g data.

However suddenly we have a situation where Dataman does not seem to be recording all the traffic but our bills show differently. In December we received a nasty R600 data charge even thou Dataman showed we had not exceeded. When we raised this with Vodacom they said this is the usage and wanted nothing to do with the matter ( Good way to port a 13 yr old account with a high ARPU ).

Now we are still seeing the data climbing, have any of the always on Apps such as facebook, Whatsapp , BBM suddenly changed their data consumption habits? I do Understand that if you send Pictures or browse pictures it will impact that usage but we understand this and would account for this if we had done anything differently.

The phone used is a Iphone 4s running the latest version of iOs 7.04 ( I think ) and we always update all our apps when indicated.

My cellular data usage on my iPhone 4S (iOS7) was always low

If i remember correctly you can check under settings - cellular data what app consumes how much data.

Does the extra data show up on Settings -> Mobile / Cellular: "Use mobile data for:" under the individual Apps or under System Services? If the former, check the settings for the problem apps, including background app refresh, which by default is ON in IOS 7. This can eat a lot of data. Also check for unnecessary use of location services that may have sneaked in along with new IOS 7 features.

If the latter, it can be a temporary Vodacom problem. You can deactivate 3G (inconvenient, and it may only result in improved battery life, rather than a decrease in mobile data usage). Or temporarily change the mobile data APN to another service provider. If this solves the mobile data issue and improves your battery life, then at least you've identified the cause.
