Disclaimer

The Vodafone dashboard software accompanying the Vodafone Mobile Connect Card and the Vodafone USB Modem includes a usage counter, aimed at giving an indication of the mobile data (MB) used.

Please note:
The volume of data you send and receive is presented on the Vodafone dashboard software, enabling you to control the costs. The usage information is presented in megabytes and not as a financial value. It is an indication and may vary slightly from what appears on your bill.

Usage Counter Disclaimer

The software accompanying the Vodafone 3G Broadband Mobile Connect Card and Vodafone Mobile Connect USB Modem includes a usage counter, aimed at giving an indication of the mobile data (in MB) that you’ve transmitted.

Please note that the usage counter gives as accurate a reflection of data usage as possible, but accuracy cannot be guaranteed. It should be seen as being indicative of total use during a given period only.

There are a number of occurrences and factors that could influence the accuracy of the data usage counter. These include but are not limited to:

The user manually resets the usage counters in the software
The user reinstalls the software at any point after initial usage
The user takes the card, insert it into another laptop and installs the software
The user uses the VMCC and software on multiple laptops or devices
The user connects via any means other than the 'Connect' button on the Vodafone dashboard
The user closes their laptop (closing screen) without pressing 'Disconnect' on the Vodafone dashboard
The user exits the Vodafone dashboard by clicking on the 'X' button
The user disconnects in any way other than using the 'Disconnect' button on the Vodafone dashboard
The user removes the SIM card from the VMCC and uses the SIM card in another device for mobile data access

Vodacom will not accept any responsibility or liability for inaccurate indications of data usage on the Vodafone dashboard and any possible discrepancies between the usage counter and actual data usage that the customer may be billed for.

Was wondering about this... why don;t they use the space on the SIM to store the usage data? Couldn't that be done? Then it would be far easier to share the card between computers!

Will ask. Nice idea.

The biggest problem with the usage counter on the dash is that it only writes the usage record of a session when that session is terminated by the 'Disconnect' button. If you always disconnect in an orderly fashion, i.e. via the button, the usage counter should be 100% accurate.

The problem comes in when disconnects occur in a non-orderly fashion, say loosing a signal, switching off your laptop while connected, etc.

Obviously all the other points in the first post also apply, but assuming most people use their data sim on one system, the disconnect issue is the biggest culprit for the dash under-reading.

Will the above also be true for programs like Netmeter Magitime etc.

How and what can we then trust, only Vodacom. If a dispute arises whit what Vodacom's billing department says what then.
Hmm... could be a problem for some exceptional cases. However I have never seen Vodacom charge for when you didn't use. Generally of late they seem to be under billing slightly at least on bundles.

This is actually a problem in both directions because if your log indicates you didn't use it how would Vodacom prove that you did. Imo Vodacom wouldn't risk a bad rep if they know you haven't used it. People generally complain through word of mouth first when they have been treated unfairly and the chancers complain directly because they want something extra.

Netmeter seems very accurate and logs most of your usage directly and I haven't noticed any missing bytes even on a complete power loss. Magitime had some problems showing a 50 character (not kidding) string on an improper shutdown. Rasmon only seems to log usage when you shut down the program. All of these seem unaffected by what happens to the modem.

Ettu, should be fairly easy to save usage into an sms slot and the program already has this capability if I'm not mistaken, should only take a few lines of code to adapt it to save the usage there. The main problem would be that sim memory seems to be very very slow so you would have to save only periodically to avoid loss of data during a write operation.

How many people really question there accounts at the end of the month. Do they just accept it as Gospel. I suppose people would only complain if the account is excessive.

Have you downloaded the latest version of Magitime ?
There is also a new version of Netmeter 1.1.2(stable)

I suppose most people that use a lot will notice if the data was higher than what they expected. We had quite a couple of complaints to that effect on this forum but as far as I can remember the data was always used in some way, and it's not just customers who suffer from that you can ask v3g. Like I said they seem to be under billing slightly which cancels out the one day I was overcharged. I used 1047.05MB and was charged 1024MB and 73c. In short I think over billing problems are something of the past. Right now I am furious over something else.

I downloaded the latest migitime but haven't tried it yet. I am using Net Meter v.3.1.
