A long time ago in a suburb far far away ....

Episode IV: A New Home
So I just bought a new house, and needed a data/voice line in the new place. So in December, about 3 weeks before I move, I visit the Telkom website and filled out a form requesting a line move.
Come move day on January, I go to the local Telkom store to check how far my process is. Well, they find no record of filling out any forms and they never processed it.
Furiously I fill out a new form to hurry it along.
Next day I check up (just to confirm), and they say it fill take a few months due to no ports available. So I start looking for alternatives....

Episode V: Telkom Strikes Back
So I hear of the new uncapped R599 LTE deal. I check online, and I am 200m away from the tower with clear line of sight. Wookie-roar! I fill out the online form, and strangely enough after 2 days a lady calls. We go through the security check, application, etc. She says it will be at my place in 5 working days. I hang up, thinking all is done. 10min later she calls: You have an outstanding balance. Yes I say, you sent me the bill 2 days before and I haven't gotten round to it yet, but I will pay it while she is holding. No, I cannot do that, it takes 24 hours to reflect. But do not worry, your application will automatically be processed.

Episode VI: Return to the phones
A few days later I call to follow up. A Roberto gets my call. No there is no record of my application. He doesn't know where it went. But we can do the application again. Nooooo. So I start on the credit check. His computer crashes. He cannot continue. But he promises to call me back...

Episode I: The Telkom Menace
A few days later with still nothing, I decide to call again. Luckily I get Roberto again. I think he must handle the "annoyed" customers. He doesn't remember me. He doesn't remember taking my cell number. He doesn't remember his computer crashing. I suspect Jedi Mind tricks. But he will see check up on my order. He says they cannot continue since they must do a credit check, and so he takes my bank account details.

Episode II: Attack of the Phone Drones
I call again. Not Roberto. Thank Palpatine. This time they semi know me. The guys sees that they cannot get a credit check done on me. He doesn't know why. (My suspicion is that since Roberto never completed the security checks, the credit company just rejected the application.) He ask that I update my details with the credit company and then they will try again. Now got my credit details from the company, seems I am a 1 on their scale. Basically perfect. So if I can get all the info, I wonder how they cannot get my details. Anyway, company contacted. We'll see if I can somehow update my details.

I tried to move my DSL line from Afrihost to Telkom not long ago, so that I can cancel quickly once my fibre is up and running. Four days of frustrating phone calls and I moved the line back to Afrihost (the line was in the holding pool, aka transfer limbo, and gets suspended after 5 days).

I've never known incompetence like Telkom's customer call centre. Almost every single phone call resulted in different instructions and information. And of course none of the suggested actions could activate a DSL line.

That was rather entertaining.

I know how you feel, it took me about 6-7 weeks to finally get my application approved. Was an absolutely horrible experience beginning to end. Still waiting for the router to get delivered though, so the wait is not over quite yet. Hopefully by the time the contract ends i'll be on a plane away from nonsense like this.

Keep tryng, you'll eventually get it right.

I do not know how they can function as a company when it takes them around 8 weeks (so far), just to get a client to sign up.
I have spoken to around 5 different people and probably spent around 5 hours talking to various people. How do they justify what an expense like that (based on their salaries) vs the profit that I will bring in.
Makes no economical sense at all.

Oh, just realized I knew the answer to my own question.
Answer: Government bailouts.

When I moved I just Pm'd TelkomZA after I logged it on the Telkom website. Charl and his team do good work. I never call the call centre. I lost my discount during the move though. Haven't been brave enough to call and request another one.

Completed my application six weeks ago, still waiting for a tracking number. Phones 10213 numerous times holding on for very long periods at a time. Hit them up on facebook etc, etc. I am at the end of my rope. I don't know what to do anymore. I am Considering cancelling and shop around for something else.

Well the day after this post we got an SMS saying the parcel will be delivered today. It was pure luck that I caught the delivery guy as I came home. Got all the stuff, now I just have to wait for the SIM to be activated.

So it us 6 weeks from application to delivery.

Episode III: Revenge of the User
Thanks to the valiant efforts by @TelkomZA, it looks like the situation has finally resolved itself. He intervenes when I thought all hope was lost and shows the light side of the force. I get a phone call that all is well and my router will be delivered on Monday. I cannot wait ...

Episode VII: The Telkom Awakens
Just when I thought all was well and everything is finally approved, I go to the courier's website. It looks like they are delivering today. Woohoo. In Umhlanga Rocks. Amazing. Not so amazing is the fact that I am in Cape Town.
