I see most if not all people on here have switched to MTN for data...

How have you done this?

Is this a pre-paid sim with data bundles

Or contract with data bundles.

Cheers.

Sw

..well both is possible technically. Prepaid with Data bundles is just more convenient [as you can have multiple sim cards]. Details should be in this forum, but a summary:

1. Buy a Sim [or use existing one]
2. Set up GPRS/EDGE/3G [calling helpdesk]
3. Load up some airtime
3. Buy a bundle [use number 141 and follow the menu -> it will convert airtime into a bundle]

I have a Nokia 6680, prepaid. Is there something I have to do to enable 3G or will my phone just use it if it is available? I bought a 10M bundle and used it up. How long must I wait before I can buy another?

Mistake

Warning! I made the mistake of taking out a MyChoice 75 topup contract for R 25 for my beautiful new SW 850 aircard. I added a 350 mb bundle as was ready to power surf - first night finished the 35 mb that comes with Mychoice 75 and then nothing! Mtn says that I will have to upgrade to plain Mychoice 75 before a databundle will work.

Thsnkd MTN for the unbelievable advice when I initially signed for the contract. Put the Mychoice 75 simcard in the drawer; got myself a prepaid card, loaded R 500 bucks and bought a recurring 350 mb of data. Should have done it in the first place.

Yea it should simply use 3G if it's there, otherwise it falls back to whatever is available.

As for databundles, it lasts for 30 days and you can only buy a new one after 30 days even if you used up your bundle. Although look carefully at the "out-of-bundle" rates, i.e. if you bought a 350MB bundle the out-of-bundle rate is say R1.50 [or less] , which implies if you use up 350MB before 30 days you go onto that plan [and not the R2 p/MB one].

Anyway, this is why you should just go and buy 2+ prepaid sim cards. If you use up the one bundle, you just buy a bundle on the other sim etc. You get these simcards for R5 in stores like PEP.

That is nonsense !!!

I am om MyChoice 75 Topup and I have a 100 MB bundle !!!

It just shows again that the MTN support does not know their own products !!!!

Academic where did you get the SW 850 and how much??

R 2 200 from Expansys. Plus DHL costs to get to SA R800 + import duties R 400. Seems as if the cheapest SA price of R 3 500 (use google) is good.

Card is amazing though.

Hi this is correct. However only the relevant SP that the contract was taken out with can load this. You cannot load the data bundles like the normal prepaid users would do by dialing 141

With the top up contract do you get to see your usage on the site?

Hi

You should be able to see it by dialing *141# Call. The Sierra 850 should support this feature. If it does not let me know ok.

Thanks

The Aircard 850 accepts typed commands, but *141# returns "invalid command". Asked Sierrawireless what they suggest and would appreciate any help.

Anybody here that would like to test a skype like application on their simbian OS?
Just let me know.
It works out to about c5 a minute and is pritty amazing.
Oh, and it doesn't work on VC!
I've actually cancelled my contractual agreement with that Government owned Cellular network ..... but, that's another story for another day.
