That looks like a full on dating site. I'm talking about something where you just go on fill out a profile etc and then you can find other people who share interests etc and make friends in the platonic sense as far as possible.

That's basically it. Sounds if you want to date within your friends group, you need to get out more. It's never a good idea to date within your friends group. Especially if it's tight nit. How I met your mother has a good example why.

Well, not exactly a “dating” site… But http://www.couchsurfing.org/ does have very good groups and personal profile section and the chances are good that you might spend some time on someone's “couch”…
Omegle and Chat roulette are not friend meeting sites! They're just a waste of time! (either that or 48 year old MR Smith pretending he's a 14 year old girl.)
Your best bet pretty much is Here on mybb, also I've actually met a few friends from Twitter (surprising, I know!), In fact someone I met on twitter is one of my best friends today.
