SA needs this, would be a relatively good seller.

Datsun Cross seven-seater officially revealed…

Datsun has taken the wraps off its new Cross, which is reportedly based on the seven-seater GO+, in Indonesia.

Interestingly, the Nissan-backed brand has chosen to drop the “GO” name from the vehicle’s official title, despite the fact that the 2015 concept wore the full “GO Cross” moniker.

Official details are still relatively slim, but we can tell you that the Cross seats seven, and gains the requisite exterior styling cues – from body cladding, faux skid-plates and roof rails with a maximum weight limit of 30 kg – to match it moniker. Early promotional material suggests the Cross has a ground clearance of 200 mm.

A fresh set of 15-inch alloys, along with automatic projector headlamps (incorporating LED daytime running lights) cited above round front foglamps, are also included. A rear roof spoiler is furthermore part of the package.

Datsun Cross Inside, the Cross again appears to share much with the GO+, although a 6,75-inch touchscreen system (with Bluetooth, USB, auxiliary and Smartphone connections) has been added. Safety equipment includes stability control, ABS and dual airbags.

The new Datsun Cross measures 3 995 mm long, with a wheelbase of 2 450 mm, mirroring the measurements of the GO+. However, at 1 670 mm wide and 1 560 mm tall, this latest model is both a little wider and a little taller than its MPV cousin.

The Cross employs Datsun’s familiar 1,2-litre naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol engine, sending its 50 kW and 104 N.m to the front wheels. Interestingly, the automaker appears to have added a continuously variable transmission option to the mix, along with the standard five-speed manual gearbox.

No word yet on whether the Datsun Cross is destined for South Africa.

Datsun enters compact SUV world with new Cross

Datsun is gunning for a slice of the compact crossover market with the not-so-adventurously-named Datsun Cross, revealed in Indonesia on Thursday.

Until now the budget brand has concentrated solely on entry level cars, so the Cross is a clear and clever attempt to move a notch or two upmarket.

Though the Cross evidently shares its basic bodyshell with the Go+, it has been treated to some serious decorating both inside and out.

To that end, it has a completely redesigned front end inspired by the Cross concept, as well as raised suspension, black body cladding, 15-inch alloys and a large rear spoiler.

Inside stylists have done well to mask its budget car origins with a more modern central air vent design, new instrument dials, metallic and mock-carbon trimmings and, perhaps most importantly, a 17cm touchscreen infotainment system. Like the Go+, the Cross offers seating for seven.

The Datsun Cross gains some much needed safety features too, in the form of dual front airbags, ABS and stability control.

There are no major upgrades under the bonnet however, where you’ll find the familiar 1.2-litre, normally aspirated triple, but Datsun is now offering a 57kW alternative to the standard 50kW version. Also on offer for the first time is a CVT transmission.

But is it coming to South Africa? We are still awaiting feedback from Datsun SA, but in our book it would certainly make sense to offer it here.

I'd wait to see IRL. Remember seeing the go for the first time IRL, it looked a 1000 times worse than what it looked like on screen.

Datsun shows off new Crossover

Datsun is branching out into the crossover market with a purpose-built model for certain Asian markets. It appears to be a serious step up in safety spec from previous Datsuns that have seen the light of day. Should it come to SA?

The new model from Datsun is called the Cross and it's a chunky looking crossover with athletic plastic cladding on the exterior. Ground clearance is excellent at 200 mm and it's capable of seating 7 at a squeeze. Essentially you can think of it as a Datsun Go+ with a bit of raise in ride height.

This model appears to have lifted the safety levels to an acceptable level. Datsun claims that the Cross is fitted with ABS, traction control, stability control and dual front airbags. That's much better than anything Datsun sells in our local market.

The engine under the bonnet is still a 1.2-litre petrol unit capable of 58 kW and 104 Nm. It's available with both a manual or CVT gearbox.

The interior remains basic but functional, as you'd expect from a budget car manufacturer. Initially, the Cross has only been slated for certain Asian market but it could do well locally as the South African market loves a crossover and the entry-level 'lifestyle' segment appears to be on the rise.

I hate gear levers which are not where they supposed to be, I'm out.

Then you can rather buy the etios. Just as ugly, equally **** interior, but at least safer.
