Datsun SA hikes warranty to six years/150 000 km

Datsun South Africa has announced that all new vehicles sold under its brand from the start of March 2019 will be covered by an extended six-year/150 000 km warranty.

Before now, Datsun Go hatch and seven-seater Go+ models featured a three-year/100 000 km warranty.

As part of the lengthier warranty programme, the Nissan-backed firm also offers roadside assistance and access to a customer contact centre buyers can call toll-free at any hour of the day.

In South Africa, Datsuns range currently comprises the Go hatchback (in 1,2 Mid and 1,2 Lux forms) as well as the Go+ (offered in the same specification levels, plus as a panel van).

As we reported late in 2018, all new Datsun models now come standard with ABS and two airbags.

Datsun GO and GO+ get Vehicle Dynamic Control (India)

The Datsun GO and GO+ are now available with Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC). The Datsun GO also gets a new colour option called Vivid Blue.

VDC is an electronic stability control system that uses sensors to monitor wheel speed, steering wheel position and lateral acceleration. Datsun claims that the system assists the driver during understeer or oversteer.

Both the Datsun GO and GO+ are also equipped with ABS with EBD, brake assist and traction control.

The Datsun GO and GO+ are powered by a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine that produces 67 BHP @ 5,000 rpm and 104 Nm @ 4,000 rpm and is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Actually impressive considering...

As long as Datsun's VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control) system doesn't turn out to be similar in function or operation to the Boeing 737 MAX's MCAS (Manoeuvring Characteristics Augmentation System) when implemented in real-world 'piloting' situations.

2019 AA Kinsey Report: The Datsun GO is the most economical city car to service or repair

The Datsun GO has scooped yet another win, emerging as the most cost-effective vehicle to service or repair in the City Cars and Entry Level category of the 2019 AA Kinsey Report.

The GO has for the fourth consecutive year - and every year since its launch in South Africa – come out on top in this well-respected survey.

Datsun GO parts most affordable in class

At R63 310, the GO’s total parts basket price this year amounted to around R3 000 less than its closest competitor’s.

The Datsun GO proved the most affordable of all eight cars in its category in terms of both service parts and repair parts.

Its service parts basket price totaled R2 047 - 16% less than the vehicle ranked second-best in this regard – and its repair parts basket price was R8 846 - 21% less than the vehicle ranked second best in this regard.

Kinsey Report 2019: the vehicles with the cheapest parts in SA are

The 2019 version of the respected Kinsey Report (now technically rebranded as the AA-Kinsey Report) has been released, and it reveals exactly which new vehicles boast the cheapest “parts baskets” in South Africa.

As reminder, the report is compiled by journalist Malcolm Kinsey and compares popular vehicles across nine categories, in terms of the prices of their spare parts. This is further split according to the cost of parts needed for servicing, repairs and crashes.

Take note Kinsey selects what he terms "relevant vehicles" in each category, so not all cars on the market appear in the report (in fact, 72 derivatives have been included). Average dealer prices for the three sub-sections (service, repair and crash) are combined to create an overall basket price, with each vehicle ranked against its competitors based on this figure.

Check out the top three vehicles in each of the nine categories below (and see the full parts pricing document on the AA’s website here):

City cars and entry level:

The Datsun Go is the overall winner here, with a parts basket total of R63 310. The Renault Kwid 1,0 Expression and Ford Figo 1,5 Trend hatchback place second and third respectively, separated by just over R1 000.

just because its cheap to fix and repair does not make it good.

coke cans are cheap to buy, but I wouldn't necessarily want my car to be made of them.

I take it NCAP rating stays the same? even with the addition of a (useless) airbag?
