I have received notice from City of Cape Town that someone is seeking to convert the church and accompanying grounds behind my complex into a daycare / aftercare centre for 45 children.

Other than the basic layout of the ERF and the other residents that have been served notice the details are very scant. I work, so Mon - Fri 7am-6pm I am not home, so on the whole I don't really object. I am however concerned about the hours of operation, additional construction work (I suspect will be minor), increased traffic and of course "noise". Given how little information I have to go on how am I supposed to make an informed decision?

Does anyone have some advice on this?

Do you know how noisy children are? You may not have a problem 95% of the time, but when you are at home on a weekday (sick or on leave) the last thing you want is a screaming herd of children disrupting your life - particularly if you're trying to get some rest.

Just Say No.

How does you back yard fit in here?

The grounds border on my backyard wall and my bedroom window will overlook the playground area.

Given the lack of details other than the proposed application I have noted my objection to the City of Cape Town.

Erm, go and ask the people who are intending to do this?

Well that's the point CCT is my contact they don't supply you with any other information. I have however subsequently received some feedback from CCT with the motivational letter from the applicant. It turns out they bought the business from someone a few years ago and only now discovered that it's not registered. So they want to get legit and at the same time propose some expansion. It would appear that this has been running all the time anyway and I've hardly noticed. I suspect however when they expand and start making use of the open field things will be different. They have also supplied a break down of operations on a typical day and it looks like it won't be a screaming horde of 45 children from 7am-6pm. They pick-up/drop off children from school and after-school activities so the number that will actually be a the daycare centre fluctuates all the time and most will be gone by the time I get home.

I have their contact numbers now, so maybe I can give them a call and see what they are about.

not quite IN your backyard is it ? :D

Good luck though

I live across from a daycare/creche , and the only thing that is of more an issue is the traffic between 7am-8am in the particular street [afternoon traffic is a bit of a non-issue since pickups are spread from lunch onwards].

On the other hand, the advantage of a place like this is, there's day-time activity around your place when you're at work [and this activity dissappears when you get home from work] ....which very well might be better in terms of crime. People get quite upset if you see dodgy people wander around a creche.....and a break in right where kids are playing might be alot more risky than a place that is secluded...

I had considered that. If they intend to use the open field I suspect they will want to fence it off which means our back wall is less exposed, so it could be a positive thing for our complex.

Just tell 'em you're a pedophile and you're sorted!

i have a day care next door to me and i must admit that it can be noisy every day. the children you can excuse but the "teachers" when they scream at the kids i stand at my kitchen window and scream right back at those women and ask them if they would like me to scream at them 9 to 5 every day and see how they like it. i must admit the owner is very alert and if the woman doing this continues screaming at the kids she doesn't last and she gets her walking ticket.
but i am permanently at home and have to admit if you off work on your annual leave and not used to it, it will be disturbing.

Well tbh, i would much rather have a daycare than an open field next to me. There's a reason why Insurance companies ask you whether there are open fields next to your place. Even if this open field is in fact part of a company's grounds who did not bother building there, it still remains a risk. It means people can sit in this field at night and watch you, it's also a perfect getaway route.

Anyway, no sure what type of field this is and the area, but yea, open fields are bad , especially if it's right on the other side of your wall.

Nightmare!
I can't stand noisy children.

you were a noisy child when you were younger and i'm sure there were a few grown ups who hated noisy children.

give the kids a break there has to be somewhere that they can go to. and it has to be a safe place.

think of it like this - at least you can keep an eye open to any harm can come to a child and you can do good and call the authorities if need be.

So I called the lady who runs the place last night and asked her about her future plans and some concerns from one of the other residents. The impression I get is that she is not going to be expanding, which means the current status quo is going to be maintained. The other resident had a situation where a stone was thrown at her sliding door window, which I brought up and she told me that the child in question had been asked by his parents to be taken away. So it sounds like she has some business integrity and would like to keep the residents around her happy. She is also happy for me to contact her in future should there be problems with noise and other issues so I have decided to change my mind and retracted my objection with City of Cape Town.

i had a little tyke climb my wall once. and i think my wall must be about 6 feet. i had 2 boerboels at that time. the male was the dominant and didn't like strangers on the property. the only time anyone, even my friends could come on my property was if my husband was home and he could let anyone on the property. luckily i saw this kid scaling the wall and told him off. i think he was just a naughty little bugger lol. you are going to get the odd naughty child. but as long as they are kept in check i think it will be ok.

put a camera over the wall and stream it to pedos, make $_$
