I recently learned about 'DayZ' a zombie apocalypse themed mod of a game I have never heard of called 'Arma 2'.

The game seems quite like battlefield though with a massive map and a shift in game play from 'blast everything' to 'hide, don't make a noise, eat and survive'. There are guns of course and one needs to gather ammunition, but on the whole there is a noticeable emphasis on survival as opposed to kill the Germans/Soviets/terrorists. Guns are, I suppose, only used to secure one's survival.

Anyway, to the point. I'd like to play this game, it seems pretty fun, but of course there is the age old problem South African's face when choosing to play first person shooters, is there a South African server? if so, is the server busy enough for the game to be fun to play,if not what are the latency's like joining overseas servers?

I read here, http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=6459&pid=122524#pid122524 that there is a South African server but again I wonder, how many people are going to be on it? Will I encounter the same issues South African WoW servers face where game play isn't as fun compared to fuller overseas servers.

The game's Wiki can be found here: http://dayzwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page
and the game's actual webpage here: http://dayzmod.com/

Any information regarding a South African community of DayZ players or anyone's account of themselves playing this game would be informative to me. Hope to get some productive replies.

I would get that credit card sorted out. It should work on steam.
I have heard people having trouble getting the hard copies working properly.

Meh. Been trying to find it for you, but my 3g connection is terrible right now. In the NAG thread linked above near the end of the thread, someone linked to a copy of AO (or was it CO?) on Takelot for R189.

Also, if it helps anyone, I wrote a guide on installing DayZ last night (Current version w/ Arma2 beta). It applies to the Steam version, but there is very little adjustment required for any other distribution medium. Link: http://wargeeks.org/showthread.php/10941-TG-s-DayZ-installation-guide

I have bought the OA copy from takealot, and downloaded arma II free from their website.
Works perfectly and it's not so hard to install I can provide help to some if wanted.
Also if your going the retail way be sure to download the latest arma II OA patch which is also around 800mb.(Atleast not that big)

Yeah you can get the retail from BTgames, only problem is the retail version is alot of work to get working(I now own 2 copies of the game, one retail one steam) and updated compared to steams version, where you can just run a batch file to run it.
I can however give feedback that the real world and the environment is awsum, just the SA server is terrible.

We managed to get a vehicle and camp site setup which took us about 3 weeks to do, all to have to lost yesterday because of a server issue.

Also there is combined operations which gives you high textures which i would highly recommend.
The game is not even in Beta phase, more alpha so its extremely buggy.I died after a week by just climbing down a ladder. If you can get past the bugs and little server issues the game is entertaining and nothing that i have ever played before.

Yeah that happened to me too.. Fortunately it was after a recent spawn, so hadn't gathered anything yet. Although I was climbing UP a ladder at the time.. and suddenly bailed off it when I reached the top. Sigh. At least that bug was supposedly fixed shortly after that.

It was fixed prior to 1.6, IIRC - current changelog only goes back as far as 1.6, so I can't get the confirmation for you. It involved climbing ladders with your gun out (I still need to check what the bloody key binding is to lower your weapon). I haven't played any of the recent builds, but am planning to this weekend, as a friend of mine has just installed it.

Oh ok, strange then that it happened.
They also need to fix the random broken bones with one shot from the zeds. On Full blood.

Just a recommendation if your coming online, Cherno and Elektro have become a Bandit paradise.

Ok I'm planning on getting into this in a big way, couple questions though:
1) best place to get Arma2, Steam?
2) can i just buy arma 2, I see there is 2 versions does it matter which one I get?
3) Hows the local server? full/buggy?
4) Longevity.. does it get boring? I'm guessing dying is pretty demotivating.

1) I recommend steam as its less work to get it working than retail.
2) You need to get ARMA 2 and ARMA 2 Operation Arrowhead (ARMA 2 OA).
3) Local server gets full sometimes, max 50 players, on the nag forum they are talking about increasing player limit as the next fix is to allow less desync and more players.
4) I cant answer that for you, its a loot , shoot , survive kinda game, When they switch on the choppers you will be able to get choppers, there are bicycles , quad bikes, 4x4 , busses , boats, that are scattered around the 234X234 km map, that can be repaired and re-fulled to make travel easier. However you become a target as its not easy just to have a vehicle...Surviving is difficult from start( you only have a bandaid and painkillers, no weapons).... If a zombie gets you they will hurt you to the point you bleed, if you go below certain blood points(health) your screen shakes until you replenish you blood by eating and drinking. If it rains your temp drops. It has day and night, night being the most dangerous as you can only have a flashlight or a gun used.

Listen like mentioned its Alpha, its bugged , if you can deal with the bugs and not get attached to your progression then get it, otherwise you will find yourself getting frustrated and hating the game.

I rate once its beta that aspect will dissapear.

You can buy ARMA 2: Combined Operations through Steam for $30. This includes ARMA 2 and OA.

There is also an ARMA X: Anniversary edition that was on special a day or 2 ago for $36 (not sure if it still is - can't access Steam from work). This version also includes PMC (for high res skins) and ARMA 1.

Sold. Don't really care about bugs. So would you say its worth buying Arma 2 just for this mod?
