DCS World. A serious combat flight sim

That's more than I have - gtx560ti 1gb, i5-2400 & 8gb ddr3 with settings at max and it is generally silky smooth. The only times I sometimes have minor slowdowns is if I have my TGP and MAV up on the displays. Even then it's no drama. It will lose a couple fps and then seemingly recover. Load times are quite long in some cases, I agree, but rather that than crap fps. To add to the load times issue though is the fact that client must always DL the server file regardless of whether it's loaded locally or not. A tad frustrating but not game breaking by any stretch. There is a rumour that they are devving a dedicated server for world (KAOT has the linky for that somewhere) so that should be quite epic for the long run.

That is only for multiplayer missions as far as I can tell, having to pull the mission file from the host. Single player load times are also generally quite long, probably they are not loading the environment as efficiently as other engines, but installing it on my (now crashed) ssd, it improved load times quite a bit.

I recently upgraded my machine, but on i5 3750k with 4GB RAM and HD7870 it runs smooth as butter.

So I'm slowly getting up to speed on the Su-25T, emphasis on slowly.

Just one thing that's got me a little stuck, is that the zoom [+] and [-] on the Schval doesn't seem to work  Any ideas?

Was looking for tutorials for the F-16 and come across this. Thought you A-10 guys might enjoy.

I would have called tumbleweed 30 secs in.

I was flying the bactria co-op mission solo the other night and was pleasantly surprised to get a tasking where they used this:

Hearing that poor grunt yelling for help made me desperately want to get in there ASAP. Pretty hectic.

My advice is, GET THE A-10 :P Can't remember the SU-25 controls that well. Won't be able to have a look tonight but when I see what it was I'll get back to you.

Would be much better if you could have a conversation like that with the troops in DCS World. Hell JTAC sometimes just go quiet before you can read back the 9-line...

DCS combined arms!

I would love to get the A-10, but 500 bucks'ish for something that I shouldn't/can't afford to spend time on is a little steep. :erm:

Actually works out to around R320... Almost can't even get drunk for that these days.

True but I still feel to get the most out of this sim you also need a decent joystick and Track IR, adding to the overall costs.

This is the main reason I put my flight time /training on hold as my crappy joystick and not being able to freelook properly kills the immersion for me. Still planning to get TrackIR - but until then my A10 is grounded.

Sure, but that goes for any flight sim these days. I had great fun even without TrackIR, especially joining the guys in multiplayer. People tend to be nice enough to broadcast target info, which takes quite a load off. So come join us and see how it goes!

You could fly a chopper or a jet with a keyboard and mouse in BF3 :P TBH, after the amount of cash I sunk into my HOTAS flight system, TrackIR etc, R320 is quite a small amount in comparison. Hell, most regular games these days cost more, and with the replay-ability of a SIM, I reckon R320 is fairly reasonable.

Hi Ouballie,

A basic joystick is good enough, all the keypresses you need (and there are mannnnyyyy) are there, you just print out the necessary docs to reference.

Flanders boet flies without TiR I am told so I assume he just uses a hat switch.
I would certainly recommend TiR though, but you dont really need a fancy joystick.
The most important thing to do with any joystick though is to just go into the DCS options and assign basic curves for X/Y axis. By default they are linear and thats no good, just a simple curve makes the controls much better.

Boet uses mouselook. I shake my head in dismay but he seems happy enough. :D

Yep, no real requirement for the joystick but it's a bonus to have twist rudder and a hatswitch. Also a throttle slider is sort of key for proper formo flying but most stock joysticks these days have all these features.

I use a saitek aviator 3 and it's an affordable stick at around R550 and includes all these features.

Can you map freelook to the mouse now? You could do it in black shark but i could not manage to do it in A10?

I do have a saitek aviator but the stick is having major calibration issues. Tried all the fixes on the net to no avail - a lot if users having the same issues. Nothing i despise more that trying to fly with a keyboard- its not "natural".

Got freetrackir working with my webcam but there is major lag, probably due to the low webcam fps.

Will try to fly again as soon as i have built ans set up my new rig after this weekend.

Yes, definitely possible to freelook with mouse. Not sure exactly how but I know for a fact it's possible. Will try and get some feedback for you.

How old is your stick? What issues specifically and what OS? Mine is about a year old and no issues at all in the calibration dept. My old stick was a saitek cyborg 3D gold. It lasted 10 years without issue until it was affirmatively shopped so I do vouch for the brand but I suppose there's always the chance of a dud.

Hope you get the build up soon Ouballie.

We've been talking about a regular mission night with the guys who have been actively flying but I'd like to get more input from the rest of the potential pilots.

So far it sounded like Sunday and Wednesday nights could be preferable, but it would depend on the amount of interest. On the regular nights we thought it may be a good idea to incorporate a bit of training as well, and by no means do you have to be an ACE to join. So a guided run through the start up procedure, along with some weapons parameters and general Q&A along with a bit of formation flying could be a great way to start the evening, followed by a mission.

Please post comments and suggestions.

Ouballie, apparently there is a command listed as something like "clickable mouse cockpit mode on/off". You're obviously looking to have that set to 'on' when using mouselook. If you are using mouselook then it's advisable to have a fairly accesible hotkey for that command as you will be switching between on and off fairly regularly as you switch between looking and clicking in the cockpit.

Vulched a mig-29 tonight! :D

We were hitting targets at an airfield and suddenly they scrambled mig-29s. Crog hit one with a maverick before he could get airborne and I got to issue the other one a sidewinder sandwich. He got airborne and started around at us. First one he punched flares and second one took him out - no ejection. Man it was intense! Nothing like an adrenaline-filled "FOX 2!" on a mig-29 with an A-10! :D A minute or so later and he would have had us.

Hoping the fidelity on the F-15 will be some what close to the A-10. You guys could start flying missions with a proper escort.
