Hi

Does anyone have recommendations on good routers that support / or can be flashed to support DD-WRT that can be bought locally?

Thanks

I have been using a TP link N750 for the past 2 years. It works fine and I haven't had any problems with it.

I am also looking for a router that can be flashed to DD-WRT. The TP-Link N750 does not seem to be available in SA anymore. Any other suggestions or anyone know where they can still be bought?

thanks

Been running DD-WRT for 3 years or so on a TP-Link W842ND, but that's also likely been discontinued by now. It's quite an exercise to get a suitable router, because the DD-WRT website is horridly disjointed and outdated. Best suggestion I could make is that you browse around the DD-WRT forums a bit and see which of the newer routers under discussion you can source locally.

The entry level dlink routers can be flashed back to stock.

Anyway, best to check the list of supported devices on the wiki

Why the desperate need?

Why not just buy a Mikrotik outright than specially buying a commercial Router to re-flash?

First time I've heard of Mikrotik. Have you had some experience with these? Is RouterOS flexible and any good? Is the hardware reliable? Would you recommend any unit (pref with enclosure)? Recommend a supplier?

If your going to use it for general pppoe connection and dhcp server then either of these below should work, they are available localy. If you are looking to use DD-WRT for a specific purpose then do some homework first regardless of what router you are looking at. Not all DD-WRT or third party modules work on all builds. Also make sure the router has enough memory to accomodate extra modules you might want to install later.

Preparing for debrick.
Don't let this put you off it's not as bad as it seems, i've had to debrick several tp-link router after playing with them and i've not completely lost a single one. The only real problem is a void warranty.
Get your hands on a soldering iron, Nokia DKU-5 cable (chinese knockoff ones are sometimes labelled DKU-50), 4 jumper pins of a old motherboard and some soldering skills.
I had a nice link to debrick a tp-link router with the nokia ttl serial cable but i can't seem to find it now.

Mikrotik is far superior and far more advanced than "hackjobs are us DD-WRT".

It's a commercial product built for purpose. If DD-WRT brought out their own Router...that's more like what Mikrotik is.

Depends on your needs really which one you would buy.

Scoop is your best bet.

Thanks guys for the input :) I'm going off to research options. Will also take a closer look at Mikrotik.

After having a look at the options I found the TP-Link WA901N(D) was my favourite for DD-WRT

The Mikrotik routers and the RouterOS really appeals. The reviews I have seen are all good and I like the idea of getting a Cisco like interface on a solid platform. The RB951G is a nice mid range router with Gigabit ethernet and 2GHz wifi.

Of the 2 I'm favouring Mikrotik.

Neither of the options have integrated modem. For this I am considering something like a TP-link TD-8817 (and not using the router part) or the Tenda 300Mbps WiFi ADSL2+ Modem Router (and again not using the router/wifi and having an extra WiFi AP if I need it).

I was wondering if anyone opinions on above and what Tenda are like?

thanks

I have been quite impressed with the Broadcom BCM6318 based Tenda D151 router that I bought a few months ago from Russ-AL PCs. The D301 and D303 appear to use the same CPU with the addition of a USB port.

You can find many positive reviews of Tenda routers on Flipkart and SnapDeal

I would also investigate the Broadcom BCM4708A based Tenda AC15 (~R1600, no dd-wrt currently) which has similar hardware to the Asus RT-68U and the Broadcom BCM4709A based TP-Link Archer C9 routers (ask dbg about MyBB discount) as they should have enough processing power to also operate as a reasonably capable NAS.
