Are the different DDR types compatible? For example will DDR 400 work on a computer that came with DDR 333 RAM?

It depends on whether your mobo supports DDR400 or not.

different ddr types are not but ddr speeds are

so if i got this correct:

ddr 266 333 400 if your board only supports 266 and you have ddr 400 it will just run the speed of your mobo

ddr 2 533 667 800

How would I know whether my computer supports DDR 400? And if I do get it will it just run slower, or won't it work at all?

if your mobo support ddr, then get ddr 400 it will work and if your mobo only supports 266 or 333 it will just run at that speed

to be honest the performance different between ddr 266 and ddr 400 is not that much

Ok, thanks for all the replies. I also have another question: Will a graphics card that has AGP 8x work on my computer, which supports 4x?
BTW, my motherboard is a Fujitsu Siemens D1520.

ouch man, yea 8 x agp should work but will work as 4x agp i think :)

not sure about this one

wow never knew they made mobo's

Um, I don't think your gonna see much benefit from your upgrade if your mobo runs the new gear at half speed.

Well I'm currently running on 256mb ram and geForce 4 MX graphics....
So if I upgrade the ram by 512mb, and get a 6 series card, then there should be quite a performance boost.

I should think so, yeah... Try getting a bit more RAM so you have at least 1GB :)

Will 1gb ram in one slot work with 256mb ram in another? That way I can have slightly more than 1gb.

I was perhaps a bit too quick with the half speed comment. You'll definitely feel an improvement with the memory upgrade.

Should work. My dads PC has one 512mb stick and a 256mb stick in it. AFAIK all of the memory will be running a the speed of the slowest stick.

Well talking about DDR 2 compatibility, it seems that my Buffalo Creek mobo doesn't support OCZ DDR 2 - think it has to do with the timings or the voltage.
