So my PC died on me last night, it turns on and then shows nothing, before going the new PC route I'm going to get a new PSU as the current one is a cheap brand, when tested it gave 2V on the 3.3V, 10V on the 12V and 4V on the 5V rails, my current PC is as follows:

Motherboard : Asus P5K
CPU : E8400
RAM : 4GB DDR2-800
Graphics Card : XFX 8800GS XXX 384MB
HDD: 250GB 7200RPM

Now I need a decent name brand PSU to power the current PC and leave room for the possibility of a future upgrade, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

corsair tx 750 or hx, or any corsair psu, stay away from gigabyte, thermaltake etc, unless you like to have fireworks at home :P

Lets say budget +- R400, don't really need 750W do I? If I have to upgrade it will be a Sandy Bridge i5 and something like a GTX550 Ti, so nothing over the top.

hmm maybe corsair cx400 will do.

@killadood your lucky then, i have not seen thermaltake smoke yet, but heard of a few, odin's i have seen personally :p

A Corsair CX430 would do just fine for a Sandy Bridge i5 + GTX 560 Ti, as well as for your current setup.

That is the best price that I've seen, since it also includes shipping & VAT.

I'd pay the extra R150 over a CX430 for a CX500. The CX series is about 50W over-rated for its listed amperage on the 12v - 336W for the 430, 408W for the 500 - which makes them really equivalent to 380W and 450W and is no surprise given their value. Plus, the CX500 has a few more connectors than the very measly number on the CX430.

Just bought the Corsair CX430, the shops around here only have EZ Cool, same as the one that I currently have, and Huntkey, when reading reviews of the Huntkey the reviewer said the unit blew up after 5 minutes of full load, I know a PSU rarely runs at full load but for R350 I don't want it to explode on me, so added R100 and bought a quality Corsair with 3-year warranty. Thanks Pada

Thank goodness! :D:):D:):D:)We all at home were tired of being greeted with a grumpy face each day that the computer was broken!

With Eskom around, it's always a good idea to have a proper PSU and a cheapo UPS also helps :)

I have an Antec TruPower 650W lying around if you are interested. It's yours mahala. PSU is about 2 years old. Never gave me a days trouble till my last PC upgrade.

I recently replaced it with a 80 plus rating PSU.
