'Dead' phone calls

It is happening increasingly to me when making a phone call, the phone rings once, or less than once, and then goes dead. I don't get through to voicemail, just silence. It sounds exactly the same as if the recipient has picked up the phone immediately but isn't speaking. But (it turns out)actually they heard (half) a ring and then it stopped, so they didn't pick up.

This has happened to me on Telkom-Telkom, Virgin-Virgin, and Virgin-Vodacom. It has happened to some of my friends too.

What is worse, I am being billed for these non-calls, at least on Virgin. Telkom I can't check.

It seems odd to me that this is affecting both landline and cellular calls. Possibly it has something to do with the loadshedding.

Is this happening to anybody else? The Telecom companies have no incentive to fix this problem, they are just profiting from it. It is up to us.

It's happened to us a few times, where hubby's mom will phone and the line goes dead after the first ring. (This is a Telkom line). She thought we were hanging up on her and took it really personally. We didn't hear from her for a couple months after that :D

If anybody is dialling, hearing one ring and then silence (either on your cellphone or landline), see the thread under Off-topic in General Discussions. Don't reply here.

sun, I've seen this behaviour on some handsets, but your Telkom-Telkom scenario points to something else.

PS. Any chance of getting my HSDPA card back? :D Need it for some testing....

So it's not only the telcos profiting from this ;)

Aha one of several culprits you posted a complaint about a while back...

@sun, please return v3g's data card ASAP.

sun is a 'known' user and does not count as one of the 'culprits' (those for whom I lent data cards and antennas and then promptly disappeared with them!)

When I saw sun posting it triggered that I need to do some tests with that specific model and thus my reply here.
