It's hard to eat an elephant in one bite. Had they started long time ago and not procrastinated, they would have covered a lot of ground by now. It's going to be a rush against the clock now. I bet they haven't even taken an audit of what skills are required to complete the job. Are we going to be embarassed? Where is HF Vervoerd? We need to lay a lot of blame on him!

do you think that if fifa pull the plug due to us not being ready / able to host the world cup that maybe then thabo might wake up and eventually fire ivy? hmmm sorry just woke up and realised i was having that dream about politicians who arent complete retards running the show.
we should have started on this the day after we won the bid to host. then we might not be in this position now. we now have maybe 1 1/2 years to build the entire thing and then start in on testing as we gotta hand over to fifa in 2008 so i somehow doubt that we gonna pull it off.

The solution is simple. Liberalise telecoms, open access to SAT3, LLU!!! The world cup telecommunications problems will take care of themselves! What is the government afraid they wont have their hands in all the cookie jars?

If FIFA pull the plug they will ask Germany to host it again.
I believe there is no chance of FIFA pulling the plug anyway, even if SA is not ready.

Do all of u remember when we were so pissed off at not getting the 2006 world cup? i ws one of em.. But now im Sooo happy that we didnt get it... Theres no chance in hell we would have been ready and we would have made a fool of our selves.
A couple of friends of mine came over here, (1 from india and 1 from the UK).
They both basically laughed at me when they heard about the fastest fixed broadband being 1 mbps. And when they heard about the prices, they literally stopped laughing and basically felt pity.
I didnt know how to explain the monopoly to them.... they just went back home telling me what a technologically backward country we are....
And imagine what kind of image SA has overseas where all these people go around and spread the news..

Corruption, self interest, and other money grabbing traits (aka sticky fingers in the cookie jar) will always be THE problem to overcome.
It has been and still is like that for telecommunications. As we get closer to 2010, you can bet there will be numerous incidents of fraud which surface.
There is plenty of time for SA to get in shape for FIFA 2010, provided EVERYBODY just gets on with the job, but we all know it's not going to be that simple.

Fair enough but it would be easy for them to counter - especially if there arent enough stadiums or hotels - that and the threat of a fine or detention if they dont register their dangerous cellphones.icyrus said:

How the hell is South Africa going to handle all that?? and for god sakes please tell me theyll scrap that rule for the world cup...If not,

Do these regulations have to be in place for the whole country or just for the press?? I know @ the e3 conference every year in LA, there's some sort of press room within the hall for all types of media broadcasts. Is it possible that the government will provide all this broadband freedom just for the press & SA remains the same after 2010?

Let us not forget about the stadiums themselves. I mean sure, if the matches are played without the pictures being properly broadcasted would be rather embarrassing. But imagine if we don't even get the stadiums finished by then; it would be a little more than just embarassement. Take for example Cape Town, they haven't even decided where the hell they are going to build it yet!
Telkom and the other operators should start commercial trials of higher broadband speeds.. the sooner they can test the resilience of the network the better.
I have this horrible feeling deep down that WC will be an entire cock-up where internet/bandwidth/SA's image is concerned.
