Their office is based in Hong Kong, but I believe most of the stuff they deal with comes from mainland China.

Their stuff is generally cheaper, but as always it pays do do your homework up front, i.e. compare costs with what you can get here, plus other international sites for the same thing, or similar.

It helps to select items that has lots of customer reviews (and star ratings), in that way you can read what people regard as pros and cons of the quality and functionality of the item.

Some of the stuff is positively dodge, but that said some of it is also very good. For example I picked it a portable blood pressure monitor for R 160, the exact same item a friend had purchased locally for over R500. Obliously it varies for different items.

Plus there is a bunch of cool stuff you just can't get here :)

Yes, that was the the final price I paid, as a straight exchange rate conversion of the dollar price I paid at the time. As stated before, no it didn't include any customs amounts as that parcel came straight through to me untouched.

It may be worthwhile to make allowances for the Customs to take their slice, and V.A.T., just to be sure it it's still inside your budget constraints, or the price you can get it locally for.

Maybe I have just been lucky so far.... someone keeps sending me gifts ;)
 
My last item from Dealextreme was an issue, a cheapie WIFi dongle was not in the package. It was posted by registered mail, I signed for and collected the sealed package, got to the office and opened it reading the instructions booklet etc. Then I realised that the actual dongle was not in the package. Funny thing, though - the package was sealed but there was a SAPO registered item number stuck on the inside of the package...

I sent a message to DX regarding the missing item, but told them that I thought it was stolen in SA. Regardless they resent the item and I received it this time.

Right now I am awaiting my WM8650 package, 30 days and waiting. Last tracked out of China 15 days ago. With bated breath as it is highest purchase to date, and this year a lot (>6) of $1-$3 items from ebay did not make it home.
 
Yes, there is always a risk of locals claiming your property for themselves.
