Or they are emotionally stinted and this is a real cry for help. Don't wildly assume things about people you know nothing about. There are a plethora of reasons as to why someone might consider taking their life, and often they will cry out for help beforehand...
depends on how they act now. This must be delt with sternly, now that she survived her relapse her life must be put into perspective so that it doesnt repeat. There must be NO choice offered. Its either you comply or we force you to comply. The reason would be to avoid fake attention seeking episodes after. Offering choice for her would be the same as offering the choice of vaccination to a child obviously the child will not want the painful injection but its necessary.
If they were honestly serious about ending it she would have not survived the night, therefore there is an element of doubt within the mind so as people who support the individual the step to take might seem harsh but it is correct. Once the treatment begins taking effect and the patient realises their failed logic then family can be supportive and spoil her etc its extremely important to know that the "heartless" step is critical
Its best explained as follows:
depression comes in waves. When the the wave is at its peak the patient is normal, this is when the aggressive modalities must be implemented and medication initiated. When the wave is at its lowest, the patient is depressed and suicidal no other option but observation may be used. The reason being is that in this state the patient is extremely unpredictable and its difficult to tell whether is normal sadness or a proper clinical depression with suicidal tendencies. Now the antidepressants delay and prevent the wave from dropping HOWEVER they cannot completely prevent it, this is where support must step in, be it friends/family or a psychologist. Long term patients will have a tough battle because the drugs lose the efficacy over time due to tolerance. Its critical you understand these stages if you know someone who suffers from depression. This disease is no joke and must be taken seriously and keep in mind it can be chronic without a cause therefore it can never be cured if thats the case because medicine doesnt understand the disease enough to do so yet. Thats basically depression 101
