Or they are emotionally stinted and this is a real cry for help. Don't wildly assume things about people you know nothing about. There are a plethora of reasons as to why someone might consider taking their life, and often they will cry out for help beforehand...

depends on how they act now. This must be delt with sternly, now that she survived her relapse her life must be put into perspective so that it doesnt repeat. There must be NO choice offered. Its either you comply or we force you to comply. The reason would be to avoid fake attention seeking episodes after. Offering choice for her would be the same as offering the choice of vaccination to a child obviously the child will not want the painful injection but its necessary.

If they were honestly serious about ending it she would have not survived the night, therefore there is an element of doubt within the mind so as people who support the individual the step to take might seem harsh but it is correct. Once the treatment begins taking effect and the patient realises their failed logic then family can be supportive and spoil her etc its extremely important to know that the "heartless" step is critical

Its best explained as follows:

depression comes in waves. When the the wave is at its peak the patient is normal, this is when the aggressive modalities must be implemented and medication initiated. When the wave is at its lowest, the patient is depressed and suicidal no other option but observation may be used. The reason being is that in this state the patient is extremely unpredictable and its difficult to tell whether is normal sadness or a proper clinical depression with suicidal tendencies. Now the antidepressants delay and prevent the wave from dropping HOWEVER they cannot completely prevent it, this is where support must step in, be it friends/family or a psychologist. Long term patients will have a tough battle because the drugs lose the efficacy over time due to tolerance. Its critical you understand these stages if you know someone who suffers from depression. This disease is no joke and must be taken seriously and keep in mind it can be chronic without a cause therefore it can never be cured if thats the case because medicine doesnt understand the disease enough to do so yet. Thats basically depression 101 :D

you can cry for help without telling someone how you'll do it. if you care about someone you don't make their life uglier. it also shouldn't take you more than 4 times to kill yourself as with many people i knew.

this is why i'm cynical of people, so many people want friendship so they can fill their own emotional hole. i'd rather die alone than know i've made anyone's life ugly, so i can't grasp how anyone can do this
Some "friends" are just in it for the maintenance. I call them high-maintenance friends. Thank goodness I got rid of them.

OP why did this girl want to end her life?

i would agree with this. At the end of the day if they arent important like direct family or spouse then just do what you can dont stress you tried and cut your loses. You will end up in some weird place you dont want to be or be taken advantage of. Depression is a real pain for everyone :/

Now that I`m feeling more rational I don`t really care what happens to her :erm:
Last night I was more emotional...dunno probably because I went through what she went through, and I felt that it was my moral obligation to intervene,It was like a vampire was drinking my blood

fortunately our relationship has declined significantly due to my 'lack of faith' in her/our religion.
Im hoping to keep things neutral between us,mostly because I don`t want to die(shes admitted to be willing to commit murder in the name of religion)

I kinda saw it comming, she'd ask odd questions about self harm, suicide and disappearing,I didn`t think it would be this bad though

A mutual friend suggested that she has relationship troubles, but I highly doubt it due to her belief
kinda interesting to see how other people interpret the same thing differently

RiaX could you list the walk-in Psych wards of Jozi, Debben, and CPT (apart from Valkenburg...I think you go there in handcuffs...might be mistaken ) for the benefit of the forum in case someone needs to drop off some Spun out whackjob in the middle of the night.

She said she didnt want to live anymore and felt isolated from her family, she also said shes not the person her family thinks she is... stuff along those lines

you cant simply walk into a psych clinic. They are specialist facilities they fall under tertiary level hospitals. You must go to any government hospital or hospital they will sedate the patient and refer to the necessary facilities.

I can name a few facilities for KZN I dont know JHB and CPT never worked there. Though again any facility will do.

EDIT:

Ive never been called out for a psych case before to give drugs to the wards. I know they dont have a Dr on duty after hours they on call but seldom come out. WRT to the private sector im not sure I dont deal with the private sector its too much of a headache

Of course you can...at least if you have medical aid. I know of whackjobs that have checked themselves into Crescent clinic (about as cushy as they come without the drinks with those pretty little umbrellas) and Kenilworth Psychiatric at all hours. Mostly they have pre-existing conditions and need stabilization or "a few days rest" as they call it .
That's why I wondered what a person is to do for some one with zero insurance in such a situation. I now suppose after reading the posts the easiest thing to do when someone is cycling manical after hours is to screech up to a government emergency room and stick a R100 note in an orderlys shirt pocket and push the whackjob out of the car and screech off .

Been there and bought the tshirt, now I tell them to go for it and call me in the morning.

People who REALLY want to kill themselves don't call other people to tell them about, people who want attention do.

Yeah,I never told anyone when I was suicidal, there's no point, they wont help me achieve my goal of killing myself then.
I`m better now :)

I couldn`t tell if she was serious or just playing, didn`t want to take my chances either.

Nobody who has ever told the long soppy stories have followed through. They are all still here today and are generally happy people.

The ones that have committed suicide though certainly don't tell anyone about it, but the signs are normally quite clear.
